🚜ENHANCHING POSTHARVEST PRACTICES IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA: INSIGHTS FROM LAE MAIN MARKET🌾 "Optimizing Post-Harvest Management for Enhanched Food Secuirty and Agricultural Profitability" Effective postharvest management is essential for minimizing food loss, bolstering food security, and increasing the profitability of agricultural enterprises. During a recent practical visitation to Lae main market as part of my undergraduate studies at the PNG University of Technology, I had the opportunity to observe firsthand the postharvest handling practices of local farmers and vendors. This experience provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within the sector. 🔍 Observations and Key Insights: 1. Leafy Vegetables (Producer/Seller): Young female from Yalu, 40 miles.   # Current Practices: Traditional packaging using Kong kong taro leaves.   # Challenges: High humidity & temperature, inadequate cool storage facilities.   # Recommendations: Introduce modern packaging materials like plastic crates & implement basic cooling facilities during transportation. 2. Bananas (Farmer/Seller): A single mother from Munum, Markharm.  # Current Practices: Hand-harvesting & wrapping in dried banana leaves.  # Challenges: Mechanical damage during transport & offloading.  # Recommendations: Use cushioned packaging materials & establish controlled ripening facilities. 3. Pineapples (Retailer/Seller): Elderly woman from WHP, residing at Eriku.   # Current Practices: Packaging in poly bags, transported using twin steer trucks.   # Challenges: Transportation and storage issues leading to spoilage.   # Recommendations: Improve transportation methods and develop storage facilities with temperature & humidity control. 👨🌾Sustainability Practices: # Encourage biodegradable packaging materials. # Promote solar-powered cooling systems for sustainable temperature control. The observations highlighted the limitations of traditional packaging and storage methods, which often result in mechanical damage and spoilage, reducing the marketability of produce. Addressing these challenges with targeted interventions and innovative solutions can significantly enhance produce quality, marketability and environmental sustainability in PNG. 💡The postharvest sector can achieve significant advancements by addressing these challenges with targeted interventions and innovative solutions. Extreme weather is affecting productivity of palm oil plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia. However, efforts to reduce deforestation - such as agroforestry - can also deliver higher yields and profits, as well as biodiversity and climate benefits. Several private sector companies have made commitments to no deforestation, peatland conversion and exploitation (NDPE) from palm oil - including major buyers like Unilever, Mars, and Nestlé. They are also trialling agroforestry-based palm oil projects to reduce deforestation in palm oil supply chains. Musim Mas Group, Unilever, and PepsiCo are working with IDH to develop sustainable palm oil supply chains in Sumatra, Indonesia. In Seruyan, Indonesia, smallholders are trialing regenerative agriculture to transition from monoculture palm oil farming to sustainable practices. Led by the nonprofit Kaleka, the project supports 220 farmers—both Indigenous Dayak and transmigrants—adopting organic methods, agroforestry, and alternative livelihoods like aquaculture and patchouli farming. Aimed at aligning with RSPO's sustainability goals, the trials show improved soil health, reduced chemical reliance, and potential for ecosystem restoration. However, challenges include land rights conflicts, deforestation concerns, and the need for financial compensation.
