🗣️“More effective cleaning and care of clothing will help increase its durability”, as explained by Lutz Walter, founder and director of the The European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing (Textile ETP). 🔵 The Textile ETP is the largest European open expert network of professionals involved in textile- and clothing-related research and innovation, of which Girbau LAB is a member. 🗣️Lutz talks about the transformation of the textile industry: from raw materials, design, production systems, distribution, and the use of clothing. He provides interesting reflections on the durability of garments, the emotional connection people have with their clothes, and care as an effective solution to increase durability and promote reuse. This article is part of the interview series that we organized together with So Good to give voice to different players of the textile sector to generate discussion about the phase of use of textiles as a key to a more circular industry. It was great to attend Techtextil in Frankfurt the other week. Two key themes stood out from the exhibition: ➡ Sustainability The technical textile industry faces the enormous challenge of implementing more sustainable production processes and materials. The promotion of circular economy concepts is also gaining importance. This not only reduces waste but also reduces the need for new raw materials. Below are two technology innovations we noted relating to the sustainability theme. 1️⃣ Norafin Group won the Techtextil Innovation Award "New Technologies on Sustainability & Recycling" for its new "Hydro-Shape” process. In this process, the company uses high-pressure water jets to join fibres into 3D shapes without the use of binders, heat or adhesives. This new technology enables the production of 3D structures in a single step. Energy and material are only used where they are really needed. The result is a 3D product that opens up new ways of reducing waste and can also be made from biodegradable natural fibers. 2️⃣ Germany-based non-woven machine manufacturer Dilo introduced the new MicroPunch needle punching system. This has been developed as a low-energy alternative to the hydroentanging process, largely for the production of wipes substrates and medical nonwovens with weights below 100gsm. Unlike conventional hydroentanging, MicroPunch does not create fiber or water waste and requires ~75% less installed power compared to hydroentanging - it is therefore considered as a valid green technology alternative for the production of lightweight nonwovens. ➡ Automation and digitalisation From automated fabric cutting to robotics, these technologies are enabling greater precision and efficiency in the production process. This not only lowers production cost but also leads to a reduction in errors, energy consumption and waste, as well as improvement in working conditions for employees. Manufacturers of technical textile machines already offer flexible machines that drive innovative production processes and enable seamless integration into digitally automated, self-controlling production lines. DIENES Apparatebau GmbH, a manufacturer of fiber processing systems and machinery, presented its approach to digitalisation which is called Multimode. In a Multimode plant, each process step is represented by a module which can be individually adapted to customer-specific requirements. The production lines consist of several intelligent modular units which can be exchanged or rearranged at any time. Moreover, all production parameters can be permanently visualised and recoded, enabling a complete traceability of the process.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in textile technology: FibeRobo, a shape-shifting fiber that can produce morphing fabrics! FibeRobo is a liquid crystal elastomer fiber that responds to thermal stimuli by changing its shape. This remarkable material opens up a world of possibilities for creating dynamic textiles, such as jackets that adjust their insulating properties based on temperature changes. What makes FibeRobo even more impressive is its compatibility with existing textile manufacturing machinery. This means that the production of morphing fabrics can be seamlessly integrated into current manufacturing processes, paving the way for widespread adoption of this transformative technology. With FibeRobo, the future of fashion and functionality is truly limitless. Imagine clothing that adapts to your body's needs in real-time, providing unparalleled comfort and performance. Stay tuned as researchers continue to push the boundaries of innovation in the world of textiles!
