90% of the jobs advertised on LinkedIn do NOT require a degree. And yet 90% of the jobs advertised on LinkedIn ask for one. Personally, I don't care whether you have a degree or not - I care whether you can do the job. Medicine, Law and other professions that DO require a degree aside... Should Employers require candidates to have a degree when the job they're advertising doesn't actually require one? We really should rethink how necessary a degree is to be successful in a specific role today.

Oz Rashid The question is why? What does a degree represent? And where does the "90% of the jobs advertised on LinkedIn do NOT require a degree" come from? It seems like a very high %...

A degree can provide a mindset, eg like an engineering mindset - but you can grasp that through internships, industrial placements, etc too if you willing to put the effort into properly shadow people, ask for more responsibility and feedback, etc. And in some roles, the connections they expect you to bring even for an entry level job - and that is something you can harder collect without college. However, you can just audit college (usually free or cheap) and collect the connections without actually getting the degree 🤷♂️

Oz Rashid I couldn't agree more! More and more, people are entering the workforce as freelancers and entrepreneurs. Opting for being tested in real-life scenarios and learning those lessons as opposed to learning the lessons and taking a test 📝 College degrees are important for many, and a great achievement, but the pedigree of your degree doesn't always translate or dictate great talent. All routes to success are important, employers must be open to finding the right talent based on the individual - that's where the magic happens! 🧙♂️

Absolutely! 🎯 Skills and experience should take precedence over a piece of paper, especially when a degree isn't essential for the job.

Oz Rashid I couldn't agree more. Lacking a degree might be a hurdle when you're starting out, but once you have experience the degree is worthless. How many people majored in what they are actually doing? My major was Advertising and Journalism - no where near where my life took me. It's the stigma of not having it that needs to change. I have two thoughts on this. One - Who's smarter/better prepared to deliver for you, the hiring manager? The person that is $100k in debt and isn't doing what they majored in or the person who's been busting their butt because they are looked at as inferior? Two- Online colleges. Why are they looked at so poorly? Again, who will deliver? The person that had one job, get good grades, for four years and probably spent a good portion of that at parties. OR, the adult that has a mortgage, kids, spouse and a full time job and STILL got a degree. I'd hire the latter every time.

As someone said "One can have many degrees but can still be an idiot". It is important to have a degree, but just by obtaining degrees doesn't exactly mean that one had gained knowledge.
