OceanaGold Corporation has commissioned New Zealand's first electric hydraulic shovel at the Macraes operation site. The shovel is currently New Zealand's largest electric vehicle. Here are a few key facts about the project: ➡️It connects directly to the national grid with a 6,600v power supply. ➡️It is designed with a shovel configuration, making it easier to manage electric cables, unlike the three similar diesel-powered machines which are excavators. ➡️By switching to this greener machine, there's an anticipated annual carbon emissions reduction of 3,600 tonnes each year. The innovative project received partial technology demonstration funding - its replication potential and impact, marking a significant step towards cleaner and smarter energy use in New Zealand. By phasing out diesel use and harnessing New Zealand's abundant renewable energy, OceanaGold Corporation is continuing to push towards its net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050 (supported by an interim 2030 target). The switch to an electric-powered shovel also aligns to a focus on efficiency, with the OceanaGold team anticipating long-term savings across both energy and carbon.
