A consortium of global energy companies has acquired a combined 40 per cent stake in ADNOC Group’s Ruwais liquefied natural gas (LNG) project as the global demand for natural gas is expected to surge by more than 50 per cent by 2040. “As natural gas demand continues to increase, this world-class project will enable us to provide more lower-carbon gas to meet growing demand today while helping the world transition to a cleaner energy future,” said Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, ADNOC managing director and group CEO. bp, Mitsui & Co., Shell and TotalEnergies will each take a 10 per cent stake in the Ruwais LNG plant, ADNOC said in a statement. Separately, the state-owned energy firm signed multi-year LNG supply agreements with Shell and Mitsui to deliver 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and 6 mtpa, respectively. Angola’s inaugural non-associated gas initiative, the New Gas Consortium (NGC), is progressing ahead of schedule, with production now anticipated to commence by the end of 2025, six months earlier than initially planned. Spearheaded by Azule Energy—a joint venture between BP and Eni—the NGC focuses on the development of the Quiluma and Maboqueiro gas fields. The project encompasses the construction of two offshore wellhead platforms, an onshore gas processing plant, and a connection to the Angola LNG plant. Upon completion, it is expected to produce approximately 9.35 million cubic meters (330 million cubic feet) of gas per day. The NGC represents a significant milestone in Angola’s energy sector, marking the country’s first venture into non-associated gas production. *** Major LNG Projects in North America *** • A total of 237 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects are expected to start operations from 2024 to 2028. Of these, 154 represent regasification projects and 83 are liquefaction projects • Asia dominates with the highest number of LNG regasification projects 99 by 2028. Europe stands second with 29 followed by South America with 7 • Among liquefaction projects, North America leads globally accounting for 43 projects, followed by the FSU and Africa with 10 projects, each • North America leads again in terms of total project cost for liquefaction projects with $203.5 billion followed by the Middle East and the FSU with $63.7 billion and $52.6 billion • For North America the US accounts for nearly three quarters of liquefaction capacity to be added in the region. Mexico accounts for almost the entire LNG regasification capacity in the region through the Coatzacoalcos project.
