Spirit Airlines has announced plans to furlough about 330 pilots by January 31, 2025, in a bid to cut costs amid financial difficulties. This decision comes after the airline previously furloughed 186 pilots, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing debt and operational expenses. Additionally, Spirit will demote 120 captains to first officers as part of its cost-cutting measures. The airline has faced financial strain following a failed merger with JetBlue Airways and has been unprofitable in five of the last six quarters. To improve liquidity, Spirit plans to reduce its flight capacity by 20% this quarter and by mid-teens next year. The company is also selling 23 older Airbus aircraft for $519 million, expected to generate $225 million in liquidity. These steps are part of Spirit’s broader strategy to stabilize its financial position and address upcoming debt maturities. 2024-11-01I DAC0297 #aviation

The turbulence will get worse before getting better if at all. Spirit Airlines is fighting to keep its flights in the air by selling some of its planes, cutting jobs and shrinking its footprint. Those moves are likely a precursor to a bankruptcy filing and perhaps an eventual merger. Buckle up! First and foremost, the sales of 10% of its fleet highlights Spirit's desperation for liquidity. The sale price of $519 million should buy its some runway through the end of 2025. While it reduces the airline's capacity, the money gives its some time to explore options ranging from bankruptcy to a merger or both. The renewed talks with Frontier Airlines after the JetBlue debacle should be viewed as a positive, but what Spirit needs is time, which is it just gave itself. Frontier was the best wingman all along. From low-cost carriers to the traditional airlines, the move is towards premium services. That's forcing carriers such as Southwest and JetBlue to evolve and adopt many of the tactics that American, United and Delta for example have. Paying for extra legroom, selective seat options, wifi service and frequent flyer lounges are among the many services. But, Frontier is bucking the trend. The airline is doubling down on the low-cost carrier model to provide a low-cost options for travelers who want a 'no frills" experience. Acquiring Spirit would reinforce that strategy. Spirit has had a rough go along with other budget airlines. Cutting capacity is only a temporary lifeline with no beverage service guaranteed https://lnkd.in/gM8djx8w #spiritairlines #airlineindustry #airtravel #business

Ever since a federal judge blocked JetBlue's plan to acquire Spirit Airlines for $3.6 billion back in January, speculation around whether the low-cost carrier would be able to turn around its finances without filing for bankruptcy has swirled. The $142.6 million loss for the second quarter of 2024 that Spirit reported back in May marks the airline's tenth consecutive unprofitable quarter. It has also taken a major hit by the ongoing recall of the Pratt & Whitney engines used in the Airbus A321neo planes that make up a large part of Spirit's fleet. On July 16, Spirit Airlines announced that it would further cut its revenue outlook to $1.28 billion from the $1.32 to $1.34 billion announced back in May. Spirit may be struggling, but its main problems also affect other airlines.

Airlines have a unique ability to lose money like few other businesses. Planes parked on the ground are expensive assets. That's why pilot usually come off better than other staff in pay negotiations. Aer Lingus pilots and the company are playing a risky game in not sitting down and hammering out a deal quickly. In Business Post I looked at the demands pilots are making, what other airlines are paying and at the business model of Aer Lingus https://lnkd.in/eczqk9zg #aviation #business #airlines #HR

"✈️ As the aviation industry evolves, it's crucial for airlines to make the right strategic decisions. However, the merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue has been criticized by JetBlue founder David Neeleman as the wrong choice. 🚫 This highlights the importance of carefully evaluating partnerships and considering long-term implications. As a platform for pilots, we understand the value of informed decisions and aim to help pilots gain valuable insights through our resources at PilotCenter.net. #aviation #strategicdecisions #partnerships 💡"

DANGER - You may want to steer clear of the entire airline industry... Let's examine why the #airline industry is the newest member of my "no touch investment list". 👉 Boeing (#BA) is a train wreck right now. Two dead #whistleblowers who made very serious safety allegations about the company. 👉 At the same time Boeing is a warm pile of doo-doo, #UnitedAirlines has had dozens of flight mishaps. 👉 The US Government denied the #jetblue #spiritairlines merger, and despite the companies' efforts, it's been called off. 👉 Which leads me to conclude that these smaller airlines are now stopped out of growing via acquisition by the federal government. Sad for consumers. These smaller airlines really need to be folded into other airlines that have better company cultures. Sadly #jetblue culture is horrendous with horrible disconnect between management and on the ground employees that deal with customers. And clearly #united has some internal issues with their airplane safety checks and SOP's for planes between flights. So bad are those issues the CEO had to issue a major letter to customers and shareholders.... What does that tell you about the trainwreck that will most likely be their next quarterly earnings results? I can't get clarity on any of this. And there are plenty of other investment opportunities out there in sectors that are not plagued with all of this. So for now, #airline industry, you will be joining the cable industry on my No Touch list. My insights go deeper than this so join my newsletter if you want to know more of our analysis of the airline industry. ▶ https://lnkd.in/gZbZxsQ9 Or know someone who is interested in this topic?
