Happy World Lift Day! In celebration of National World Lift Day, we have put together historical facts about the history of the lift: 1. Pickering’s Limited is one of the oldest engineering firms in the United Kingdom. Originally, Pickering’s was a manufacturer of pulley blocks and hoisting equipment, but the company went on to invent self-sustaining hand lifts and service lifts, developing belt-power and hydraulic lifts. In 1932, Pickering’s Lifts was a founding member of the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA), which is still going strong today. 2. Back in 1865, when a hotel in London named Langham opened its doors, it was known to be the first to have a hydraulic lift; however, at the time, these were not called lifts but instead known as ‘’rising rooms.’’ Inside these rising rooms, each car would have an upholstered bench, beautiful woodwork, mirrors, and a gaslight chandelier! The guests were there to be pampered on a slow, enjoyable ride. 3. Before the lift, the top floor was the worst place to live and was not so glamorous; at one point, this was classified as poor and unhealthy, as well as dangerous to be in! Following the invention of the lift, the top floors of the multi-story building are now one of the most expensive and luxurious spaces to be. 4. Pre-World War I, the ‘elevator operator’ was considered a highly skilled job and took 3 years of training to be classified as qualified for the role. In 1888, the first commercial push-button electric lift was designed, manufactured, and installed by Pickering’s Lifts for the Middlesbrough Co-Operative Society.
