The best city ad I’ve seen. A masterclass in persuasive storytelling. And you can use these same simple tactics to become unforgettable whenever you speak. 99% of city ads? They sound like a sales rep trying to close the month: "Spend here! Check out this spot! See our parks!" It’s overplayed and uninviting. Here's what makes this ad resonate: 1) 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Starting with “I wouldn’t come here,” or “Is this even a city?” breaks the ice right away. Self-deprecation disarms people and drops their defenses. 2) 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 “Try that in Paris or New York.” The contrast gives Oslo power, showing what makes this city a unique alternative. 3) 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The whole thing’s tongue-in-cheek—and that’s why you kept watching. Humor through exaggeration draws people in when it’s clear it’s for a laugh. 4) 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 "Everything is so available." The ad highlights everything the city offers: art, food, warmth, community—with quick cuts that bring it to life. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆? Humor works—don’t underestimate it. Making fun of yourself shows confidence and makes people want to keep listening. If you’re looking to tell your story, lean into humor. Name the competition. Highlight your uniqueness.
