🏥 Let's talk about patient safety in Europe! Is it getting the attention it deserves? ⚠ In Europe, 1 in every 10 patients experience harm while receiving services in a hospital, and as many as 4 in 10 patients are estimated to be harmed while receiving care in primary and ambulatory care settings across the OECD countries 📢 In a recent letter to the European Commission and Members of the European Parliament, the Alliance for the Digitalisation of Hospital Medication Management Pathways urges the creation of a European Patient Safety Strategy. 🩺A coordinated European strategy is urgently needed to tackle medication errors, healthcare-associated infections, and overworked staff. These issues are putting patients at risk. 👨⚕️ 👩⚕️ The wellbeing of healthcare workers is equally crucial. They're the system's backbone, and we need them to be healthy and focused! The alliance calls upon European policymakers at all levels to take immediate and concerted action to prioritise patient safety as a fundamental principle of the European Health Union. 분당서울대학교병원 (SNUH Bundang Hospital) ® has been a pioneer in enhancing patient safety through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), known as SAFER (SNUBH medical Alert First Responder). Led by Professor Lee Yeon-joo from the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, this team has significantly reduced the incidence of cardiac arrests in the hospital. Since its inception in 2012, SAFER's swift intervention and use of real-time monitoring technology have showcased the critical role of experienced medical personnel in emergency response. Committee member and superintendent pharmacist at Jayson's Pharmacy, Nitin Lakhani, attended the 'Spotting the sick child - meningitis, fever & respiratory infections' webinar held by Spire Healthcare Group plc yesterday evening. Here's what Nitin had to say about the webinar: "Spire hold regular free training sessions for GPs, Nurses and Advanced Practitioners. Yesterday's session was extremely good and it covered an area that I needed further enforcing. Coincidently, I had a patient at the surgery - an 18 week old baby with high fever - and had to go through all the checks identify the causes. Plan of action, treat and safety net and rule out any if the emergency Red Flags. "If you go through the link below, there are other sessions planned through the year. 4 Priorities for Post-Acute Facilities, per 1 association president (article link in the comments): Training, retaining and recruiting staff should be the top priority for post-acute facilities, Rajeev Kumar MD, president of AMDA-The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, told Becker's. Regarding nurse shortages, Dr. Kumar said recruiting, training and retaining competent and compassionate staff is a top priority. This process should include allowing them to operate at the top of their license and providing career ladders to enhance their personal growth. According to Dr. Kumar, facilities also should prioritize recruiting medical specialists such as cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, infection disease specialists and wound care specialists. These specialists, along with keeping physicians and advanced practice providers in house, can improve care for complex and chronic cases and avoid hospitalizations. Lastly, Dr. Kumar said getting medical directors trained and certified in medical direction and geriatrics can improve quality assurance and performance improvement.
