#EngagedLibraries read with all kinds of friends. 🐾 Reading to animals is a fun and popular way libraries promote reading skills. OCLC's WebJunction offers examples of pet-related programming in this recent article that features bow-tie crafting for pets, fire safety programs for furry friends, and library pet photo roundups. One program you'll learn about is from Jackson District Library Library in Michigan, which hosted the Read to a Dog (or Cat) event with adoptable pets. Children from the community practiced reading while also offering companionship to the four-legged visitors from the Jackson County Animal Shelter. 📲 We want to know how your library brings furry friends into programming. Myth Buster: Adopting Black Cats at Halloween By FRANCIS BATTISTA October 27, 2011 (Editor's note: This is a repost from October 2010 on an important lifesaving topic) Last year during Halloween season, Sharon Harvey, executive director of #Cleveland Animal Protection League (APL), was bombarded with outraged calls and emails complaining about Cleveland APL’s black cat adoption drive, which was done in conjunction with the Cleveland APL, PAWS, Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village, Lake Humane Society, Friendship APL and Pawsibilities, the Humane Society of Greater Akron. Why all the fuss? There is an old rumor that adopting black cats around Halloween is dangerous because there are legions of devil worshippers or animal abusers out there looking for black cats to sacrifice or torture. Not true says adoptions guru Mike Arms, brainchild of the annual Home for the Holiday’s promotion and president of Helen Woodward Animal Center: “I have heard this old wives’ tale more than once in my career. You would think by now that pet adoption agencies would be professional enough to be able to screen potential adopters in evaluating a good home life.” There is no evidence that adopting black cats around Halloween poses any greater risk to the pets than adopting them at any other time of the year. National Geographic did an article in 2007 titled “Ritual Cat Sacrifices a Halloween Myth, Experts Say.” Experts on Halloween and cults have found "no confirmed statistics, court cases, or studies to support the idea that serious satanic cult crime even exists.” But myths die hard especially when they are perpetuated by well-meaning shelters or rescue groups who are themselves just acting on or passing along an unsubstantiated rumor. There is, however, plenty of evidence to show that not adopting cats of whatever color from shelters will cost them their lives. In most shelters, black cats are the last to be adopted, so saddling them with the additional baggage of taking them off the adoption roles for up to a month or more before #Halloween makes no sense. Black cats and all cats in shelters have much more to fear when it comes to not getting out of shelters at all. The overwhelming majority of pets dying in shelters today are cats. https://lnkd.in/gjzkP4bj Imagine deliberately harming #cats #kittens #dogs and other animals for fun and profit. #Cleveland #APL #telethon #animalcruelty #animalwelfare #animalrescue ** See screencap and comments.

𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬. The youngest one was rescued along with 25 others from saddening conditions. When I see what happens every single Easter, my heart hurts, and I truly wish all of us knew these facts because "it’s estimated that about 80% 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙀𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙙 within the first year, so this is a life-and-death issue." (source) 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 "𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝" 𝐨𝐫 "𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭"? Bear with me to check the main reasons to stay away from rabbits this Easter: 1. 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧: they are incredibly fragile animals and will get injured when manipulated by a child. 2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬: in fact, they'll die soon if so. Rabbits should live around 8 - 12 years. Their vet should also specialize in exotic animals. They are a life commitment and a costly one. 3. 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬: first off, let's never gift someone a living being. Animals are not objects, and the person is probably not ready to deal with this surprise. 4. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝: things like that demand energy and are only possible with a lot of rabbit literacy. If you know all of this and still want to take care of a domestic rabbit, please make sure 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵. There are plenty rescued and waiting for a home. Breeders keep them in bad conditions and take out the chance of survival ones. I wish I had known about this for my first one. Shout out to PETA, who wrote this article below. 𝘓𝘦𝘵'𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. NATIONAL MAKE A DOG’S DAY | October 22 - National Make A Dog’s Day on October 22 is a holiday that invites dog-lovers everywhere to go the extra mile for their pup. #MakeADogsDay Today is a reminder to animal lovers everywhere to adopt a pet instead of buying a new one. In fact, we encourage everyone to visit a shelter to see why adopting a four-legged friend will make the world a better place. Why should I adopt a pet? Approximately 3.1 million dogs enter shelters in the United States annually, many being relinquished by their owners. Worse still, approximately 15% of the animals that enter shelters are euthanized. While numbers continue to decline, the need for adoption continues to be overwhelming. One sure way to make a dog’s day is giving them a new, loving home through adoption. When you adopt a pet, you are: Saving a life. Stopping animal cruelty in breeding facilities. Saving money for spaying, neutering, vaccination and sometimes microchipping. Choosing from a large selection of dog breed who are normally house-trained. Adopting a dog who has received excellent care in the shelter, which means they are healthy. Adoption is just one way to make a dog’s day. If your favorite canine companion could talk, they might tell us going for an extra-long walk would make their day. When was the last time you visited the dog park? Of course, a new chew toy might top their list, or a special treat. Sometimes, they just want to play. Throw the ball already! Another thing that tops the list of fur babies everywhere – don’t stop scratch'n! LONG TIMER! Meet Juno! Estimated to be just shy of 5 years old, this toy-loving sweetheart is TCAS’s longest resident. Juno has been with us since 10/14/2023 after being found as a stray near the Kennewick WinCo. We know for sure that Juno is a hard no for cats. Despite her shelter stay, she’s the happiest dog you’ll ever meet and adores all humans, young and old. Video link - https://lnkd.in/gfD4fNyw https://lnkd.in/gfD4fNyw Our shelter is currently past capacity for dogs and cats, and we are doing everything we can to accommodate the influx of animals. We’ve purchased more XXL pop-up kennels and are utilizing all available shelter spaces to ensure every pet has a safe place to stay. Right now, we are in dire need of adopters for large breed dogs. These gentle giants are waiting for loving homes, and they need your help now more than ever. If you’re considering adding a furry friend to your family, please visit us and meet our wonderful dogs and cats. Even if you can’t adopt, sharing this post can help us find homes for these deserving pets. Additionally, please know that our doors are always open for sick or injured animals. We are committed to providing immediate care and shelter to those in urgent need. If you find a lost dog here are some steps to help you help them find their way home and stay out of the shelter: 1. **Check for Identification:** Look for a collar with tags and have it scanned for a microchip. If the dog has ID, contact the owner immediately. 2. **No Identification? Ask Around:** Knock on doors in the area where you found the dog. Someone might recognize them and know where they belong. 3. **Post on Social Media:** Share a photo and description of the dog on local community groups or lost pet pages. This can help reach a larger audience quickly. 4. **Check the Lost and Found Website:** You can do this at www.animalsheltertc.com by going to the “Find a Missing Pet” tab where you can report the found animal and check local lost reports that have been filed to see if it has been reported as missing. 5. **Call the Shelter:** If you're considering bringing the animal to the shelter, please call ahead. This way, we can inform you whether we're able to accommodate the dog at that moment. 6. **Provide Temporary Shelter:** If you can safely contain the dog, provide temporary shelter in your home or a safe space (like a fenced yard) until the owner can be found. 7. **Don't Take More Than You Can Handle:** If you are unable to safely contain the dog should the shelter not be able to immediately take it in, it is advisable to not take the animal from its current location and make a call to animal control to report the situation. Your safety and the dog's well-being are top priorities. By following these steps, you can increase the chances of reuniting a lost dog with their family safely and effectively.
