ICYMI: Improving Open Access Discovery for Academic Library Users, a new #OCLCresearch report, examines strategies for making scholarly, peer-reviewed open access publications more discoverable for your library community. OCLC Research partnered with SHB and UKB in the Netherlands to explore efforts by their staff to make open access publications more discoverable and examine user behaviors. I’m so proud to work in a community that is a designated Book Sanctuary community. 📚 What Does It Mean to Be a Book Sanctuary Community? 📚 Protection of Diverse Voices: A Book Sanctuary Community actively defends books that are banned or challenged due to their content, themes, or the identities of their authors. It’s a commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard, even voices that we might disagree with. Fostering Open Dialogue: By supporting the availability of a wide range of books, these communities encourage open conversations about complex, sometimes controversial, topics. They believe that exposure to diverse perspectives is essential for growth, empathy, and understanding. A Safe Haven for Readers: Being a Book Sanctuary means creating spaces where readers of all ages can explore literature without fear of censorship. It’s about safeguarding the freedom to read what resonates personally, even if those books are in opposition to what we believe. Standing Against Censorship: Whether it's in schools, libraries, or local bookstores, a Book Sanctuary Community stands firm against efforts to restrict access to books. It’s a collective stance against the suppression of ideas and for the empowerment of readers to make their own choices. Duck into #EngagedLibraries for fun. 🐥 Libraries are many things, including a source of creativity and fun for the community. One great example of this is found at Portage Public Library in Wisconsin, which held its Duck-tober Duck-orating Contest for families. Each participant was given a rubber duck with instructions to turn it into a fall-themed masterpiece. To pick winners for each category, including teens, adults, and families, the community was invited to visit the library and vote for their favorite designs. We think you’ll agree that the entries are pretty “quack-tacular.” 📲 We want to know how your library is an outlet for imagination.
