What are the benefits and drawbacks of a subscription model for podcasts? I've been having some interesting conversations on this topic in recent days and also spotted this excellent piece by Steven Goldstein from Amplifi Media. He accurately points out that subscription only works for a few rarified series, and that most programme-makers are best served by seeking mixed monetization models. Unless you have a lot of time, patience, skill, and luck then a subscription model is more likely to fail than succeed. Which is why I have always thought that programme-makers along with those comissioning series need to consider the objective of their podcast, and ask if monetization fits into that aim (or if it gets in the way). There is also a basic irony at play in the #podcasting world. More and more people are listening to them, but the profusion of shows makes monetization a harder nut to crack. This is why I have long recommended that people need to take a wider view on podcasts. They should be seen as a complement to something else an organization wants to achieve such as thought leadership, brand recognition, or loyalty. If you are interested in finding out more about the ways that podcasts can be used and the differing models for rolling them out, then do drop me a line. Also read Steve's piece! It’s tragic, really. So many good, important ideas and messages. So much good content by good organizations doing important work. Published into the abyss. Never to be seen or read or watched by your community. If you’re going to take the time to create important content for your social mission, then you need to learn how to create content that’s ACTUALLY scroll-stopping. That gets more than just likes and shares, but actually MOVES your community and develops deeper relationships and real world action. In this week's episode of Designing Tomorrow I share everything we’ve learned about how to create scroll-stopping content for your social mission. The good news is you already have what you need to do this. You just have to learn how to rethink your approach and learn to package your content for our modern digital channels and behaviors. I'd be curious to hear from social impact content creators and marketers. What have you seen work well to break through with your content in a meaningful way?
Are you tired of putting time and energy into creating content that just doesn’t get meaningful engagement from your community? We’ve all been there. You’re proud of your hard work and effort. A feeling of excitement rushes over you as you hit “post” or “publish.” This one’s going places, you just know it. Only, it doesn’t. It flops. Or maybe a few people engage but nowhere near the level of traction you need to take your mission to the next level. It’s one of the hardest and most disheartening parts about creating and producing content. And it makes you question if any of your energy and investment is even worth it at all. Sometimes it even feels unfair, like the algorithm holds a weird personal grudge against you, or that people’s attention spans are so short these days that they don’t engage with anything meaningful anymore. Other people seem to be blowing up and going viral, and their content feels generic, clickbaity, and low value. What’s going on here? In today’s episode, we cover: ➡️ The top 10 mistakes we see that stop marketers from getting traction with their content ➡️ The importance of framing and packaging your content in a way that actually captures attention ➡️ The mindsets and habits of successful content creators that will forever change your thinking on content creation ➡️ And how you can apply these strategies to your own content to start getting the traction you need Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/44d6nWv Listen on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3xKTd74 Watch/Listen on YouTube: https://bit.ly/4d9wfXi #ContentCreation #DesigningTomorrow #ContentStrategy

The podcasting landscape has shifted dramatically, with YouTube surpassing Apple Podcasts as the leading platform. Even the best can lose their market share if they dont focus on it as a core business: - YouTube now dominates, accounting for 31% of U.S. podcast listening, driven by its superior discovery tools and video integration. - Apple's focus on audio-only content and lack of monetization tools has led to a decline in market share. - Video podcasts, supported by platforms like YouTube and TikTok, are becoming the new norm, transforming how users engage with content. #Podcasting #YouTubePodcasts #ApplePodcasts #DigitalMedia #ContentCreation #TechTrends #VideoPodcasts #CreatorEconomy https://lnkd.in/d_jQ3D8e

Paywalled podcasts? 🛑 Seems to work quite nicely. ✔ Kvartal, a leading Swedish independent media publication, made a segment of certain podcast episodes available to subscribers only. This led to a jump in subscribers, proving that a publication’s podcast listeners are potential digital subscribers. Here’s what happened: 🟢 Buying a whole season in advance worked very well as 85% of subscribers chose to pay in a single transaction 🟢 Remaining 15% chose to pay monthly 🟢Average rate for paid single podcast episode purchasers to convert to subscribers is 10.1% Bonus insight: early morning is the best time of day to release a podcast episode. So what does this tell us? Mainly that diversifying podcast monetisation is an avenue worth exploring (perhaps even necessary) to adequately remunerate podcasters. The current ad-funded model doesn’t accomplish that as you need to have thousands of listens to see some profit. This take on the subscription model is a novel way, and one of many, that publishers and podcast producers can use to monetise their content. We’ll see if and how fast it catches on. #podcasts #subscriptions #podcasting #monetization #revenue
