University rankings wield significant influence in higher education worldwide. They serve as windows into a university's standing, reflecting its research calibre, academic standing, and graduate prospects. A strong ranking not only enhances visibility but also attracts investment and talent on both national and international fronts. However, it's important to recognise the limitations inherent in these rankings. By condensing a university's multifaceted performance into a single numerical rank, we risk overlooking its diverse strengths. For instance, some institutions shine in areas like community engagement, local problem-solving, or cultural preservation—qualities often sidelined in conventional ranking metrics. The pursuit of higher rankings or excessive emphasis on international publication or research could overshadow the importance of addressing local challenges or refining teaching standards relevant to the local settings. So while rankings offer valuable insights, they must be used or reflected with caution. Let's not overlook that the true essence of education lies in fostering holistic excellence, encompassing both global relevance and local impact! #universityrankings #highered #meded #education https://lnkd.in/gwBSxH9U

📌The differences in our universities, and the unique way of categorizing them, are at the heart of our proposal. This calls into question the current systems of national higher education and research, particularly how they classify institutions. By combining our strengths, we aim to develop an institutional model within the European Union that empowers marginalized groups through creative solutions to shared challenges. 👉The categories representing Emerge are: Comprehensive universities with strong regional focus: Democritus University of Thrace - (D.U.Th.) (Greece), University of Limerick (Ireland), Universidade da Coruña (Spain). Universities that lean towards the model of applied science: Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (Norway), Université Bretagne Sud (France), Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici (Slovakia). Universities that specialize in Humanities and Social Sciences: Europa-Universität Flensburg (Germany), Université Rennes 2 (France). A smaller private university deeply rooted in its regional community at the edge of Europe: Neapolis University Pafos (Cyprus). 🤝We aim to continue enhancing our strengths by embracing our differences, all for the sake of a better future for our community!

“…engineering, medicine, and technology are useful and necessary; yet, they ‘are the handmaidens to society,’ in which ‘society…is made out of individual humans. And if you don’t understand individual humans, you don’t understand what makes an effective culture. There is nothing more important to the survival of society than social science and the humanities.’” The Huannities are essential if we’re to encourage informed democractic citizenship and to empower everyone to be critical of institutions that exercise power and also to develop an understanding of the human experience, past and present, based on empathy. Such an understanding is an antidote to extreme ideologies which centre on nativism, racism, xenophobia etc., The cutting of Humanities programs across the UK is undermining UK HE more broadly, and will only serve to damage the sector’s standing on the world stage. Such a sad state of affairs.

"The academic world is often sorted into separate boxes, but the real-word problems we’re facing can’t be neatly filed away. How can we make interdisciplinarity work practically in both teaching and research? Our discussion includes advice on how to implement interdisciplinarity in teaching and research, what students get out of interdisciplinary work, the distinctions between multi- and transdisciplinary work and how they differ from interdisciplinarity, and how universities can promote interdisciplinary learning from the word go."
