Lisbon-inspired #JobstobeDone, #tech through the ages, #diversity, connection, solitude, & VUCA*!
The privilege of being asked to lead a half-day session on innovation at the annual Global Product Development Strategy Summit of a major #healthcare business, in Lisbon, this week, provided rich stimulus to reflect on best practice, in-practice, and the march of progress! I was last here 20 years ago with former #Dyson colleague, Andrew Nixon – during a secondment with injection-moulding toolmakers for the first ‘Ball-vac', DC15! (Those e-bikes definitely weren’t on the Praça do Comércio, then!)
‘Jobs’ and ODI; gazing out of the 737 window at the upturned ‘winglet’, emblazoned with low-cost airline branding, I was reminded of the impact of data driven insight – in this case through eliciting stakeholder jobs to be done, and mapping desired outcomes (Outcome Driven Innovation #ODI) against importance and satisfaction.
The breakthrough insight that underpins much of today’s budget air travel experience was understanding that passengers didn’t find reclining seats, meals, or even a few cms of extra legroom all that important on <3hour flights – indeed, many were happy to trade these features for substantially lower prices.
Engineering; then of course there’s the technology – that fancy bit of upturned composite reduces the drag caused by invisible vortices. (Drag degrades aircraft efficiency and performance, especially at speed and altitude).
With the NetZero imperative bearing down, and Hurricane Beryl strengthening into the earliest Category 5 on record — it was sobering to reflect we need to double down on eco-tech investment. And probably our choices, too.
(Random aside; if Europe receives Beryl’s aftermath, centuries-old street cobble ‘technology’ is infinitely better at supporting water run-off and maintenance, than tarmac)!
Contextual observation: I was reminded of the power of observational research… it’s fun to see tourist centres, but even more rewarding is to walk quiet streets where washing hangs, street art talks a universal language, various ages of transport tech seem to get along, and multicultural communities go about their daily business.
No amount of #AI can duplicate the creative stimulus a designer or researcher will experience when they see someone struggling to open a product’s packaging, or the many forms of diversity up close.
With the summit finished, and a few hours to stroll, I was reminded of the power of a little solitude; putting the smart-phone down and allowing the luxury of cognitive ‘bandwidth’ to reflect on what we’ve talked about and been inspired by, the people we’ve met, the actions taken – to process the #VUCA, and build new associative connections!
To wrap – a huge thank you to a deeply inspiring, diversely talented international group, for welcoming me to be a part of their event!
What has stoked your curiosity, this week?

3moThat's too many links in your statement, pal)) Worked hours on this? Midnight oil burning? 😂
