In the past 6 months, I've applied for over 90 management positions in aquatics, athletics, camping, and restaurants, resulting in 25 initial interviews, 8 second interviews, and 4 additional interviews. Despite being flown out for 2 final interviews, one job offer was rescinded when I tried negotiating salary, and the other company ghosted me. Only a few employers communicated rejections, with minimal feedback provided. When I secure my next role, I commit to transparent communication. Good news: I received a job offer! Bad news: There was something fishy about it. 🛑 A few days ago I applied for a job and was sent a list of 15 questions to answer. They were literally the normal type of ID-themed questions you would get in an interview. I thought it odd but answered them all anyway. The next day I got an email offer saying they liked my answers and would pay me an obscene amount of money (like over $160,000/year) and could start immediately after a week-long onboarding. I countered with that I hadn't directly spoken with anyone at the company and had a number of questions of my own - ones that I would normally ask at the end of an interview. I sent them a list of those questions that I would want answered before accepting the role. What answer did I get in response? Radio silence. My client got a role he wasn’t supposed to get. More context: This past week, my client landed an interview for a Project Manager role with a bachelors degree and 0 years of experience. He managed to make it to second round interviews, but then he met the competition. A hard working individual with a masters degree and 3 years of experience. It seemed like a no brainer my client wasn’t going to land the job, right? Against all odds, he ended up getting the offer. When he asked his employer: why me? His employer said: “𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.” —------------- We try so hard to fit in all the boxes of a job description we forget something crucial, The human connection employers seek more than any skill or qualification. #InterviewTip: Look for reasons you DON’T want to work there instead of fantasizing about how great it would be to work there. Think about what would happen if you treated job interviews like first dates. You don’t go into first dates blinded by love, do you? If you do, take a pause. Typically, your guard is up and you’re there to learn. You want to see if their values align with yours. You need to know if they’re honest, treat people right, or could be toxic. Are you there for a good time or a long time? What happened to the last person? Be the same way with your interviews. This will help you not get your feelings hurt when it doesn’t go anywhere. The streets are always talking, so do some digging—I’m talking about real-deal detective work. Get to know these employers before you catch feelings. Don’t let them love bomb you or fill your head with promises they can’t keep and core values they don’t abide by. Keep your options open until you find the one. Still keep your eyes and ears open then, too. Let your standards remain high and keep your expectations low. That representative usually fades away right around the 90-day mark.
