🌟 Intentional Leadership and a Legacy of Service: 3 Key Takeaways from Dr. Bob Dent 🌟 I had the distinct honor of meeting Dr. Dent at the Magnet Conference—a leader whose journey inspires not only nurses but all healthcare professionals striving to make an impact. He is the vice-president of patient care and chief nursing officer for three hospitals within Emory Healthcare. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation: 1️⃣ Be Intentional with Your Career Dr. Dent shared how he mapped out a 25-year plan early in his career, identifying the roles, certifications, and education he needed to reach his goals. This deliberate approach allowed him to rise rapidly, becoming one of the first nurses recognized by Modern Healthcare as an “Up-and-Comer.” His advice? “Know where you want to be and reverse-engineer the steps to get there.” 2️⃣ Stay Involved – Volunteer to Lead Both Dr. Dent and I started our leadership journeys by chairing shared governance councils at the unit level. For Dr. Dent, this experience was transformational—it was his “gateway to leadership.” He emphasized the importance of engaging in professional governance, saying, “Every nurse is a leader, whether at the bedside or in organizational councils. Use your voice to make a difference.” 3️⃣ Empowering Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) As a Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Dent leads with a philosophy of relationship management and collaboration. His dyad leadership with the Chief Medical Officer ensures alignment on supporting both APPs and the medical staff. He shared how he worked to integrate APPs into peer review and credentialing processes by securing a seat for advanced practice providers on key committees. This approach ensures that APPs have the resources, trust, and advocacy needed to deliver exceptional care. “It’s about developing trust, fostering accountability, and recognizing that we’re all working toward the same goal of delivering great care,” he said. I definitely learned a lot as I lead NPHub and NPHire. Dr. Dent's career is a testament to the power of knowing your purpose. “Find your purpose, write it down, and stay curious,” he advises. To all aspiring nurse leaders, what’s your ‘why’? How are you staying intentional in your career? Let’s celebrate each other’s journeys. #NursingLeadership #MagnetConference #SharedGovernance #APPAdvocacy #CareerGoals #HealthcareLeadership

🌟3 Key Takeaways from a Sutter Health Executive: Dr. Melinda Mata🌟 I had the pleasure of collaborating with Dr. Melinda Mata when I was the Executive Director of the California Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, and Melinda was a standout leader in the case management department at Sutter Health. Together, we reduced preventable hospitalizations—a testament to her strategic leadership and unwavering dedication. Now, as a Nurse Executive in Ambulatory Care, Dr. Melinda continues to inspire and drive impactful change. Here are 3 key takeaways from her journey: 1️⃣ Words Matter 🗣️ Melinda reminds us never to say you’re “just” a nurse—you are an agent of change! As first-generation immigrants, both Dr. Melinda and I know the tendency to downplay our milestones. Let’s choose empowering words that reflect your passion to improve healthcare. 2️⃣ Stay Curious 🔍 Dr. Melinda’s journey highlights the power of curiosity. She leveraged her financial acumen in case management to eventually pivot into executive roles. Her strategic mindset and willingness to learn have been key drivers of her success. 3️⃣ Be Strategic in Education 🎓 Dr. Melinda and I share another common thread: pursuing MBAs to strengthen our ability to foster stakeholder collaboration—one of the most challenging yet rewarding skills. Her advice? Invest in education that equips you to lead at the intersection of patient care and financial outcomes. Dr. Melinda also emphasized the unique value of nurse practitioners (NPs) in healthcare. As a CNO of NPHub and NPHire, I couldn’t agree more—NPs bring empathy and advocacy rooted in their nursing perspective, creating meaningful impact for diverse populations. 🌍💉 Dr. Melinda’s story is a masterclass in resilience, leadership, and the art of the career pivot. 🚀 To all aspiring nurse leaders: stay curious, embrace strategic education, and never underestimate the power of your words! #NursingLeadership #CareerPivot #AmbulatoryCare #CaseManagement #NursePractitioners #HealthcareInnovation 💼👩⚕️ 👏 Dr. Melinda, thank you for inspiring us all! Let’s keep leading with purpose and empathy. 🌟 Let’s connect and collaborate! If you’re passionate about driving change in healthcare, drop a comment or DM. 💬

Her journey is an inspiring reminder of the power of resilience, passion, and alignment with purpose. 🎯 3 Key Takeaways from Joanna's Story: 1️⃣ Follow Your Why: Joanna's career is a testament to the importance of discovering your purpose. Starting her journey in public health policy, she pivoted into recruitment—a field where she found a "happy marriage" between her skills and her passion for helping others. 2️⃣ Be an Agent of Change: At UCLA Health, Joanna champions Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), ensuring that the workforce reflects the communities they serve. At UCLA Health, nurses and healthcare professionals thrive because they are supported, grown, and valued—a reflection of Joanna’s commitment to meaningful recruitment. 💡 Advice to Aspiring Nurses and NPs Who Dream of Joining UCLA Health: Joanna’s wisdom is simple yet profound: Find your why. Connect deeply with the mission of the organization you aim to join. 🌟 3 Key Takeaways from CANP Health Policy & Practice Chairperson Dr. RON ORDONA, DNP, FNP-BC, GS-C, WCC 🌟 I had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Ron Ordona, a fellow first-generation immigrant and an unstoppable advocate for nurse practitioners 👩⚕️👨⚕️. During my time as an Executive Director for the CA Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, Dr. Ordona led the charge in reducing hospital readmissions by making home visits 🏡 and ensuring seamless care coordination. Today, as the Health Policy & Practice Chairperson for CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS CANP 🌟, he continues to make waves in healthcare advocacy. Here are 3 key takeaways from my inspiring conversation with Dr. Ordona: 1️⃣ Get Involved Locally to Drive Change 🌱💬 Dr. Ordona’s journey in advocacy started small—attending local CANP chapter meetings, speaking up during hearings, and seizing every opportunity to get involved. His dedication and persistence led him to become a board member, showing that even the smallest steps can lead to massive impact 🚀. "Just start at the local level—attend meetings, speak up, and you’ll see it’s not rocket science," Dr. Ordona encourages. 2️⃣ Find Your ‘Why’ 🔍💡 Dr. Ordona’s passion for advocacy is deeply rooted in his mission to address the national healthcare provider shortage. As a private practice owner 🩺, he felt the limitations of restricted practice authority. His "why" inspired him to champion AB 890, a landmark bill creating a pathway for nurse practitioners to practice independently starting in 2026 🎉. "My goal is to expand access to care, especially in underserved areas where providers are desperately needed," he shares. 3️⃣ Advocacy Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint 🛤️🏆 Passing pivotal legislation like AB 890 and SB 1451 wasn’t easy—it required years of resilience, coalition-building 🤝, and perseverance against well-funded opposition 💼. These laws now empower nurse practitioners to open their own clinics 🏥, starting with the first cohort in 2026 🌟. "The pandemic showed us the urgent need for more providers in rural areas and beyond. These laws help close that gap," Dr. Ordona reflects. Why This Matters for Nurse Practitioners 🚀 AB 890: Paves the way for independent practice, giving nurse practitioners the freedom to open clinics and expand access to care 🌄. SB 1451: Strengthens implementation, streamlining the process so NPs can confidently lead in 2026 🩺✨. Dr. Ordona’s leadership is a testament to the power of advocacy and how nurse practitioners can reshape the future of healthcare 🎯. 🎉 Grateful for leaders like Dr. Ordona who inspire us to dream bigger 🌟, act bolder 💪, and create lasting change for the NP community. Let’s keep the conversation going: How can we empower more nurses to step into advocacy roles? Share your thoughts below! ⬇️✍️
