I will be giving a talk at a Wake County Libertarian Party event next Wednesday on how license plate readers are used by police https://lnkd.in/geK6ruYk The use of technology in policing is often not presented in a way that lay individuals can really understand how it is used. This lack of knowledge tends to lead to inane critiques or endorsement of the technology. Tech can be used for good or bad, and I believe it is important for state agencies to describe how it is used, whether it is effective, and take steps to mitigate harms that may come from such systems. I think that there are reasonable changes that can be made to how ALPRs are currently used in policing without causing significant friction in their use as real time investigative tools to help solve crimes. #alprs #crimeanalysis #talk

People often ask what our less lethal technology is designed for and when it would be appropriate. The short answer is to give officers an immediately available, intermediate force option when needed. Most fatalities begin with police responding to suspected non-violent offenses, many of them mental health calls, domestic disturbance, or traffic stops, and we've all seen body cam footage of how quickly things can get out of hand... Our technology is not designed for the situations that rapidly devolve giving officers only a split second to respond, but rather when things have slowed down in an encounter... where the officer(s) have their weapon drawn and have dialogue with a non-compliant and/or threatening subject... These situations are referred to as a 'planned event' by our law enforcement team, and these are the types of encounters where our device is designed to save lives, protect officers, and mitigate risk.
