How can we accelerate the safe deployment of Level 4 autonomous vehicles? Earlier this month I had the privilege of co-hosting an insightful discussion with mobility industry leaders in Munich, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and my Boston Consulting Group (BCG) colleagues — Alex Koster, Dr. Markus Hagenmaier, and Paul Jordan. Our key objective was tackling the challenges and identifying opportunities in the ADAS and L4 autonomy space, related to private vehicles, trucks, and robotaxis. A few standout observations based on the discussions: 1️. Consumer Education: Raising awareness about safety benefits, convenience, and cost savings is crucial to driving adoption. 2️. Modeling Strategies: Choosing the right AI training and testing approach is critical for addressing long-tail edge cases. 3️. Standardization: As the market consolidates, standard solutions across regions will be key to unlocking L4 scale. 4️. Global Competition: China is pulling ahead in L2+ tech and leading L4 investments, fostering a strong local supplier base. 5️. System Challenges: While L2+ systems are gaining traction, handover issues, and complex traffic situations continue to challenge consumer trust and convenience. Many thanks to the participants who contributed to these discussions: Andrea Ketzer, Andreas Herrmann, Dr. Bernd Schmaul, Dr. Dirk Linzmeier, Erhan Koseoglu, Francis Chow, Gerd Roesel, Steiger Gerhard, Jörg Ohlsen, Dr. Katharina Amann, Dr. Manaswini Rath, Michael T. B. Chan, and Shinpei Kato, and special thanks to the World Economic Forum's Sebastian Buckup, Maria J. Alonso Gonzalez, Witold Ladislao Kopytynski, and Abhishek Gupta for helping make this collaboration a great success. #AutonomousMobility #Level4 #ADAS #FutureOfMobility #BCG #WEF #Mobility
