Members of the Craft have developed forensic science, solved famous crimes and invented all manner of things. Several members of the royal family have been members of the Craft and the declining interest in the organisation from younger royals is also discussed. Masons have been very active in the criminal justice system – both as ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’. It was a Mason who formed the Special Branch to fight terrorism and another who brought the Moors Murders to an end. In some cases, such as the Cleveland Street Scandal, Masons found themselves on both sides of the law. The medical profession is also well-represented in lodges. Happily, it was a member of the Craft who rescued the Elephant Man and a Masonic doctor was the first to identify an occupational cancer. On the other side of the coin, there have been evil Masonic doctors who committed murder and other heinous crimes. One Masonic surgeon may have committed regicide with the ‘mercy killing’ of a king. In addition, there are stories of weird and wonderful Masons – celebrities, film makers, soldiers, explorers, world-famous businessmen, politicians, forgers and scoundrels. The remote Pacific airfield used to launch the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II is being revived with a different foe in mind: China. Runways emerging from the encroaching jungles on the tiny island of Tinian, a U.S. territory, are part of a sweeping shift in how America’s military would respond to a possible conflict in Asia. Instead of relying on a few large air bases, the U.S. would disperse its warplanes to make them less vulnerable to China’s enormous arsenal of missiles. That means identifying, upgrading and reviving airstrips across the Indo-Pacific that could be pressed into service. The U.S. Air Force calls this effort Agile Combat Employment, or ACE, and the rebuilding on Tinian is a key piece of that. The point is to “not consolidate all of our aircraft into one big, juicy target,” said Michael Winkler, deputy director of air and cyberspace operations for the Pacific Air Forces. “There’s a dispersal aspect to it, and then there’s flexibility as well where aircraft aren’t specifically tied to one base.” If that sounds straightforward, it isn’t. Keeping smaller units supplied across disparate, distant and bare-bones locations is hard. There is another distance problem: The farther aircraft spread out from the main battlefield, the harder it can be for them to contribute to the fight. North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday under orders from leader Kim Jong Un, claiming a flight trajectory surpassing previous tests. Kim reportedly observed the launch, describing it as a demonstration of North Korea’s ability to counter its adversaries. This launch occurred shortly after South Korean intelligence indicated that North Korea may soon conduct its seventh nuclear test, with the capability to launch a long-range missile reaching the United States. South Korea and Japan both detected the missile, with the Japanese Defense Ministry noting it reached a height of over 7,000 kilometres and travelled approximately 1,000 kilometres. The United States condemned the launch, calling it a provocation amid escalating tensions. Simultaneously, North Korea has been accelerating its weapons program, with its constitution recently amended to enshrine nuclear capabilities as a strategic priority. Pyongyang has conducted numerous weapons tests, including missiles capable of carrying heavy warheads and possibly even nuclear payloads. In response, South Korea imposed additional export controls on materials for solid-fuel missiles to hinder North Korea’s development of ballistic technology. Meanwhile, the U.S. raised concerns about North Korean soldiers potentially aiding Russia in Ukraine, as reports surfaced of North Korean troops in Russian uniforms heading to the region. Tensions remain high in the Korean Peninsula, with each side ramping up military readiness and diplomatic manoeuvring. Additionally, it is also likely that this launch is part of the continued testing of missile systems being developed by North Korea, possibly now being supported by Russia in exchange for their support in Ukraine.
