Good news! We welcome the Canadian government’s plan to split Bill C-63 into two separate pieces of legislation, which means that the Online Harms Act portion of the Bill, which proposes to create a new Digital Safety Commission and a Digital Ombudsperson, has been moved to a pre-study at the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. Amendments to the Criminal Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act on online hate will be considered later. Civil society organizations, including feminist advocates like LEAF, have been pushing for the Bill to be split since it was introduced earlier this year. LEAF supports the federal government’s initiative to develop a framework to regulate online harms, and broadly supports the Bill’s stronger protections for victims and survivors of the non-consensual distribution of intimate images. To ensure that the proposed Digital Safety Commission and the Digital Ombudsperson are equipped to provide meaningful support to survivors, LEAF asks that substantive equality and human rights serve as central guiding principles for both entities. Without centering these principles, these new entities will not be able to serve many of the survivors effectively and contribute to further harm, especially survivors from marginalized communities. Here's what this looks it in practice: - Naming substantive equality and human rights as guiding principles and required expertise for DSC and the Ombudsperson to embody and represent - Requiring operators to establish clear and accessible appeals process for content that was wrongfully flagged for removal, such as consensually expressed sexual content - Ensuring robust resources and funding for the DSC and the Ombudsperson

50 years ago, an image like this would have been unimaginable. Even 20 years ago, a picture of these remarkable women might have led to assumptions about them being recognized for roles like PTA leaders or administrative staff—positions, while valuable in their own way, often stereotypically assigned to women. But today, this photo tells a different story: it represents #progress. Today as I flipped through this month’s Utah State Bar Journal, I was reminded of how far we’ve come. The barriers women and other underrepresented individuals have faced in the legal profession are being broken, one glass ceiling at a time. Today, I want to shine a light on The Appellate Group, a firm owned and operated by an extraordinary group of women, specializing in appellate law. This firm is proof that the future of our profession is bright and #inclusive. To the #Utah legal community—if you don’t know them yet, you should. The Appellate Group is a top-notch resource for all your appellate needs. Keep leading the way, ladies! The work you’re doing is inspiring, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. #WomenInLaw #GlassCeilingShattered #WomenLeadership #AppellateLaw

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in our nation's history in the battle against slavery. It's a day of reflection, education, and celebration of the progress made while acknowledging the work still to be done. It symbolizes freedom, which extends beyond the political and social realms. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let's also strive to empower ourselves and our communities with the tools and knowledge necessary to continue the fight for equality on all fronts. #Juneteenth #FinancialIndependence #Freedom #Equality Book a free no obligation session with me to explore ways to build your wealth, protect your assets, and enable your dreams. https://lnkd.in/erBM68Wj

Mentors, like Mark Lemley, Eric Goldman, Pamela Samuelson, and countless other inspirations have gone to bat for me and made me who I am. So, proud to partner with ChIPs Network and Joan Toth to document the importance of mentors /sponors to success, especially by women IP professionals - but also, the difficulty women have in finding them. This is the first in a series of projects that the Diversity Pilots Initiative, with Margo Bagley, Jason Sandvik, & Jillian Grennan and I are planning on mentorship, we welcome your input and advice on the questions that you as mentors or mentees are interested in re: how to scale this transformative intervention - for those who can get it.
We are proud to release our special report on women in tech and IP law and policy! Special thanks to the Diversity Pilots Initiative of University of California, Berkeley - School of Law, Professor Colleen Chien, Professor Margo Bagley, and Jason Sandvik for their partnership in this study.
