You are the average of the people with whom you surround yourself. Today, I'm attending the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association's VTLA Ascend Summit: Advancing Women in Law. We're talking about business development, taking care of our clients and our referral connections. And while I'm here in this room of phenomenal women trial lawyers from around the state, I'm also celebrating one of my closest #lawmom friends who achieved an absolutely amazing outcome for one of her clients this morning. I love the camaraderie of the women attorney groups I belong to. We refer clients to one another; we roundtable sticky legal issues to help identify solutions; we celebrate each other's victories; and we commiserate over unhappy outcomes too. The internet was a new thing when I was a young lawyer (anybody remember getting AOL CDs in the mail?) and social media didn't come along until years later. Networking and developing these kinds of strong relationships took a lot of personal time and work back in the day, but in today's modern world, there are so many avenues to developing your core group of professional colleagues that support you and vice versa. If you aren't doing it already, start putting yourself out there. Engage, attend events, get out of the office and put the weekly lunch on your calendar, join the online groups, and make real connections with people. You only stand to gain from that effort at investing in yourself and your circle. #lawlife #lawyerlife #maketheconnection #personalinjurylawyer #personalinjurylaw
