This is the last nail in the coffin for a company that has fully embraced mediocrity and shortsighted business strategies and has stopped listening to its customers long ago. Over 100M #Chromecast devices have been sold in 10 years. That's more than the number of Pixel phones #Google has ever sold. Those little HDMI dongles have probably been the most successful piece of hardware ever made by Google. They have turned many old TVs into smart TVs that could show YouTube and Netflix videos, and even cast phone and tablet screens onto TVs, for less than $50. But Google has decided that Chromecasts should also join their humongous graveyard. The devices currently in stock will still be sold, but no new devices will be produced. The reasoning, in the official announcement, is that most of the TVs out there today are smart TVs with their own apps. Which means a couple of things: 1. Those at Google are unaware of the millions of TVs out there that have been produced before the past decade (or more recent low budget TVs) and are still in use. 2. The Google Cast protocol, which itself is based on open standards, is very mature, and has thousands of applications and libraries developed for it, is basically dead overnight. The alternative (developing native apps for a much more fragmented smart TV market, from Android TV, to TizenOS, to Roku OS, to Apple TV, to Amazon's Fire TV, or for whatever Google is going to come up with next etc.) increases entry barriers, fragmentation, development costs, and it's a game that everyone (TV producers, developers and customers) is likely to lose. 3. Google has suddenly decided to pivot so aggressively to Android TV that it's keen to kill one of its most successful products (an HDMI dongle), where it basically holds an uncontested duopoly (together with Amazon), in favour of a product that holds ~15% of market share, in a much more competitive and fragmented arena. This is almost the textbook definition of a corporate strategy suicide - Google is increasing the risk by reducing the diversity of its offer and putting all the bets on a single product. 4. Developers who have spent years developing and maintaining solutions that support Google Cast are unlikely to migrate to whatever Google proposes next (or at least that's the case for me). I personally don't want to waste any more of my development time building stuff against products made by a company that kills products at the whims of a product manager and has absolutely no respect for developer time. Google has lost the trust of the developers, and without the trust of 3rd-party developers you can forget building any ecosystem. There's a silver lining though. With Google out of the way, open cast protocols (Miracast and DLNA in first line) have a cumbersome closed implementation out of the way. Time to let thousands of open (and cheaper) dongles flourish.
