Whilst 7% of the UK population live in food poverty, around 7% of all food intended for human consumption is going to waste on UK farms each year, and farmers are struggling to stay in business. 🚜🍎 The Circular Agriculture Hub, developed by Dr Lucy McCarthy (University of Bristol Business School) and Dr Anne Touboulic (Nottingham University Business School), hopes to tackle this disconnect in our food supply chains by pairing farmers with surplus produce to community-based customers such as food banks and social supermarkets. In doing so, the Hub will reduce food waste and its lost value to farmers, whilst providing affordable food to local communities. 🌱 Discover more about how Dr McCarthy was able to achieve far-reaching societal impact through her time on the ARC Accelerator, to work towards setting up this self-sustaining social enterprise 👉 https://lnkd.in/d6xsFfja #FoodWaste #FoodPoverty #CircularEconomy

Interesting conversation here, Our current food systems are highly dependent and driven by Aid, philanthropic grants, government subsidies like fertilizers and seeds program in Kenya, loans and expensive credits. Transitioning to Agroecological food system would promote regenerative systems, economic and thriving communities, improve population and harmonious living with nature and realities of climate change. #climatefinance #peoplepower #agroecologynow #climatejustice https://lnkd.in/d_XM8cjd

We are thrilled to introduce our Farm2Plate Program, an initiative of @barham_inyas_foodbank_ dedicated to addressing food sustainability and combating hunger in our communities. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 17: Partnership For The Goal, Farm2Plate focuses on cultivating farmland to grow fresh produce, which is then shared with beneficiaries and vulnerable individuals in our community. This initiative is not only about providing food but also about fostering a sustainable future where access to healthy meals is a right, not a privilege. In addition to supporting those in need, Farm2Plate plays a crucial role in reducing food loss and waste. By rescuing surplus agricultural produce and redistributing it, we aim to make the most of available resources, ensuring that food is not wasted but instead used to nourish those who need it the most. Through this program, we are committed to creating a lasting impact by promoting sustainable farming practices, supporting local agriculture, and helping vulnerable populations thrive through partnerships. Together, we can contribute to a food-secure world where no one is left behind. #FarmingData: Participation of farmers in agricultural value chain has been amply demonstrated to result in higher incomes and quality services for farmers. In 2023, Solidaridad Asia supported 469 entrepreneurs in building financially viable models, while 1,145 farmers became co-owners in the supply chain across commodities. We also provided 3,341 beneficiaries with additional employment through our support, and 146,464 farmers were recorded to have received new or improved services from Solidaridad-supported service providers. 💸 🔗 👉 To know more about our achievements across Asia in 2023, click here: https://lnkd.in/gamgSvPa. #2023InReview #2023Highlights #StatOfTheWeek #DidYouKnow #BusinessEcosystem #FinancialSupport #AgriSupplyChains #FarmerProsperity Solidaridad Network Shatadru Chattopadhayay Nitin Rao Monika Khanna Selim Reza Hasan Anitha Munasinghe Yeni Fitriyanti Law Chu Chien Sebastian Taylor

Bit of a lightbulb moment at the AFN Network+ Big Tent conference this week in Sheffield. We know food is too cheap to support sustainable farming, but we also know there's a huge issue with affordability among low income families - even though food in the UK is among the most affordable in the world when comparing average disposable income to food costs. However, what hadn't hit home was that the BIG difference between where we are now, and where we were 40-50 years ago, is HOUSING COSTS. With housing now consuming up to 80% (or sometimes more) of disposable income, no wonder food needs to be cheap. Can we solve the problems in food and farming if we don't first solve the housing crisis? Dominic SingleDadSW Watters laid this out starkly at the conference, and has also done so in a recent AFN webinar (https://lnkd.in/eANg3Tep). Given that shelter is down there with food in the most basic of human needs (according to Maslow), it's clear to me that we can't address food and farming issues in a sustainable way until we deal with the housing crisis. Thoughts?

Accurate, timely data isn’t just important—it’s transformative. 🌍 Farmers need actionable insights to make informed decisions about their crops, water usage, and markets, just as we rely on real-time information in our daily lives. At Producers Direct, we’re empowering smallholders with the tools and data they need to thrive. This is how we drive lasting change—from the ground up. 🌱 #SmallholderFarmers #DataForChange
Do you have 20 seconds to imagine? 💭 Imagine it’s a typical morning, and you’re getting ready for the day. You check your weather app, but it’s not working—so you guess it’s sunny and skip the jacket. On the way to work, it starts pouring rain, and you’re drenched. At the station, the train info screen is blank, so you wait, losing time and patience. When you finally reach the office, you’re ready to close a big deal—but your email isn’t working, and there’s no way to reach your client. Now, imagine living like this every day—without access to critical information that could help you make decisions. This is the reality for most of the 600 million smallholder farmers around the world who are responsible for producing around 30% of the food we consume. Despite their central role in feeding the world, many still lack the tools and data they need to make informed decisions about their crops, water usage, and market opportunities. At Producers Direct, we are committed to changing that. We invest in smallholder farmers to address the power imbalances in how we grow, distribute, and access food. Together, we’re building a profitable smallholder-owned global cooperative. Our approach empowers farmers with real-time, actionable data and insights, allowing them to make informed decisions that improve their livelihoods. By tapping into the collective wisdom of farmers, we’re creating a knowledge-sharing network that amplifies impact. Want to learn more? 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗙𝗠𝗢 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗞𝗚’𝘀 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 We are very happy to share this news with you: FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, has joined NKG’s Smallholder Livelihoods Facility (SLF) as a new partner. The SLF, established as part of the NKG Bloom initiative, is aiming to bridge the financing gap to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers. Together with the dedicated partners IDH, Rabobank and US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the SLF was developed as innovative revolving credit facility and has successfully disbursed over 11 million USD to date to individual smallholder farmers and farmer groups in four countries. Coffee farmers use the SLF financing to carry out long-term farm investments, invest in renovation of unproductive coffee plots, or purchase high-quality inputs. Through instant cash advances via mobile money, farmers can pay medical or school fees and bridge cash gaps. NKG Bloom aims to reach 300,000 smallholder farmers by 2030 through holistic service packages, including essential technical support, production-related services, and access to finance. Currently, NKG Bloom reaches more than 96,000 with these services. Joining the SLF aligns with FMO’s mission to promote sustainable development and economic growth in emerging markets. This partnership enhances FMO’s ability to support smallholder farmers with the financial resources they need to thrive, further accelerating NKG's sustainability model and align it with the IFC Performance Standards. Together, FMO and NKG are committed to creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for coffee smallholders worldwide. At Acceso - our #marketdriven model is built on true partnership with #smallholderfarmers. If our farmers don't succeed - we don't get product to buyers and Acceso’s model doesn't work. We get into the #foodsystem with and to serve our farmers. So for us, #outcomes have been the name of the game since day one. We’re excited to be a part of the Outcomes for Change Fund - piloting the first large scale results-based fund in a fragile state. Together with Haiti Food Systems Alliance, Levoca, IDB Lab, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Vitol Foundation and Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) - we are changing the narrative on what is possible in #Haiti.
