📣 Read our takeaways from this Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) roundtable in Brussels organised by SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute and hosted by Sweden in EU. Aaron Maltais, Arati Davis, Jane Birch. https://lnkd.in/gNEADft4 With the new European Commissioners named and soon to go before Parliamentary hearings, here's what we'll be looking out for as details emerge on the EU's planned Clean Industrial Deal: ⚡ How will competitiveness, climate goals and global partnerships be articulated to benefit EU partners in emerging and developing economies 💱 Climate finance to address the high cost of capital as a complementary part of the EU's green industrial policy ⚖ Mechanisms for technology cooperation to enable emerging economies to benefit from industry transitions and increased value added for in-demand raw materials
🌍 Event takeaways from the LeadIT Roundtable on Inclusive Green Industrial Policy on 10 September. 💫 Last week we held a high-level roundtable in Brussels hosted at at Sweden’s Permanent Representation to the EU. It brought together government officials, industry leaders, experts from both emerging and developed markets to discuss inclusive green industrial policies and the role they can play in decarbonizing heavy industry. It was a lively and engaging discussion - thanks to everyone who took part including Ambassadors Karin Ekerdal (Sweden in EU) Saurabh Kumar (Embassy Of India Brussels) and Pedro Miguel da Costa e Silva (Mission of Brazil to the EU) The debate was conducted according to Chatham House rules but we do have some key insights to share: 💡 Leadership & Vision - Strong political leadership and public-private collaboration are key to driving industrial decarbonization, and global scaling of technological solutions is needed. 💡Competitiveness vs. Climate Goals - Countries are balancing green industrial policies with competitiveness and energy security, but concerns about trade barriers and uneven participation in the green transition were highlighted, especially for emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). 💡 Fairness & Climate Finance - Access to climate finance and addressing the high cost of capital in EMDEs are critical for green industrial investments. 💡 Critical Materials & Renewable Energy - The need for equitable partnerships to ensure EMDEs benefit from their resources and integrate higher up in green value chains was emphasized. 💡 Partnerships & Cooperation - Global cooperation is crucial to avoid a two-speed transition, where advanced economies move ahead while EMDEs are left behind. 🔑 Final thought - Decarbonizing industry must be a globally inclusive effort. Fair partnerships and cooperation are needed to ensure no country is left behind in the green transition. #Sustainability #GreenTransition #ClimateAction #InclusiveGrowth #IndustryDecarbonization #LeadIT
