Unprepared for a new normal? An explosive cocktail of factors, among others a shortage of firefighters and the lack of establishing safety zones and other preventive measures, is now raising a storm of criticism against the Nea Demokratia government. The criticism a mere repetition of the demands for government protection that has been brought up repeatedly - and with limited results- through the latest years of increasing devastation. Among the victims of the fires has been the generations-old industry of beekeeping, deeply integrated in the ecosystem now threatened or destroyed by climate change and the fires: https://lnkd.in/dnjAN9Ez In the words of the beekeeper Markus: "If the bees go extinct, that will be the end of the world." #greece #grækenland #fires #climate #austerity

In light of recent catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which have displaced over 600,000 individuals, the urgency of addressing climate change has never been more apparent. The devastating impact of these floods has not only resulted in tragic loss of life but has also turned thousands into climate refugees, highlighting the dire need for proactive and sustainable solutions. https://lnkd.in/d6H9wmV2 As continuous rainfall and rising water levels make current locations uninhabitable, entire neighbourhoods in Brazil are being considered for relocation to safer areas. The Brazilian government, recognising the severity of the situation, has committed significant resources to aid in the recovery and relocation efforts, demonstrating the crucial role of governmental action in combating climate change. The story of Jéssica Lima and her family, who have lost everything in these floods, is a poignant example of the human cost of environmental neglect. Their resilience and determination to rebuild amidst such adversity is not just inspiring, but a call to immediate global action to mitigate climate risks and protect vulnerable communities like theirs. As we move forward, it’s essential to support initiatives aimed at sustainability, environmental conservation, and innovative solutions to climate-related challenges. Let’s work together to ensure a safer, greener future for all. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #ClimateAction #GreenFuture #SustainableDevelopment #FloodRelief #ClimateRefugees #BrazilFloods #RioGrandeDoSul #Resilience #GlobalWarming #CarbonCredits #OceanBlocks

As we fiddle “Rome” burns… Every decision we take, from what we buy, how we consume, the politicians we elect, is now existential. Canada will see some of the worst effects of climate change. From storm devastation on our coasts to killer wildfires across our great land. Environment Canada has said our air quality index has dropped significantly since wildfires have accelerated and it’s going to continue to get worse across our entire country. Will it take us all literally choking in the streets to finally take #climatechange seriously, or will we just accept that we will die sooner, be more miserable and get on with our day? If you turn on the news, you’ll see that this year's summer in the northern hemisphere is bringing record-breaking heat and wildfires caused by climate change. The fires are everywhere, from California to Russia, from Canada to the Balkans, burning millions of acres, displacing untold numbers of people, destroying or damaging thousands of buildings and severely impacting air quality and the health of millions. In the Balkans they are fighting 122 fires, while at the same time the Greek Island of Evia had to be evacuated due to an approaching fire. Southern Europe is currently at high or extreme risk of wildfires because of above average temperatures in the spring and summer that have left the land dry and easily ignitable. To the east, Russia is experiencing their own wildfire summer. By mid-July, they had experienced 6,000 fires this year that burned about 3.5 million hectares in Siberia and Eastern Russia. In North America, the Canadian wildfire season began early and is expected to end late. At the popular resort town of Jasper, Alberta and the neighboring Jasper National Park 25,000 people had to evacuate quickly as a fire quickly damaged 30% to 50% percent of the structures in the town. Experts say that the fire in the park could burn for months. Further south in California, the Park Fire is the fourth largest in California’s history burning nearly 400,000 acres. According to Cal Fire wildfire activity in the state rose 2,816% from last year with 751,327 acres burned to date. What can you do? Reduce your consumption. Switch to solar. Plant trees. Buy/use less plastic. Get an EV. Many small changes add up to a big impact. #wildfires #solarenergy #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #protecttheplanet #EmpoweredByLight #ClimateAction #ProtectOurPlanet #MakeADifference #EnvironmentalAction #EmpowerChange

🇨🇦 I associate Canada primarily with its vast untouched wilderness and the breathtaking beauty of its nature. Now there are sad news again - the reason for this is climate change, which is now particularly affecting large parts of this huge country. Facts that are very thought-provoking: 👉 in the last 40 years, snow cover has decreased by 20 to 40 percent, depending on the region, for example. 👉 at the same time, average temperatures have risen faster than the global average 👉 more forest burned in Canada in 2023 than at any time since records began Underground fires and a winter that is too dry give rise to fears of the worst for 2024. The "zombie fires" do not currently pose an immediate threat to people. However, this could change quickly, depending on how much precipitation falls in the coming weeks and months. According to BCWS statistics, there were more than 2,250 forest fires in British Columbia last year, burning over two million hectares of land. This is equivalent to an area the size of Tuscany in Italy. Once the process has started, it is very difficult to stop. First the forest burns with its old tree stands (and with it a huge carbon store), then the forest fires also reinforce global warming. A quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions from wildfires came from Canada in 2023. A vicious circle! #climatecrisis #environmentalprotection #netzero #globalwarming https://lnkd.in/deGNNEzQ

As devastating wildfires intensify across North America, fueled by a warming climate, #IndigenousLands are disproportionately affected, amid over 28,000 fires burning more than 4.5 million acres in the U.S. alone this year. The isolated nature of these communities complicates aid access, stressing the pressing need for immediate and uncompromising #ClimateJustice and relentless aid efforts. #ClimateCrisis #IndigenousRights https://lnkd.in/ejVsRqBa
