Thursday Thoughts: The Paralympic Games and Individual Choice Welcome to another Thursday Thought! Let's discuss the Paralympic Games and the importance of recognising individual preferences within the disabled community. Paralympic Representation: The Paralympic Games highlight extraordinary athleticism and challenge stereotypes about disability, offering positive representation. Diverse Perspectives: Not every disabled person aspires to be a Paralympian, and that's perfectly valid. While the Games provide important visibility, it's essential not to assume everyone desires or should pursue athletic achievements. Respect and Diversity: ✨ Varied Aspirations: Understand that disabled individuals have diverse interests and goals. ✨Avoid Assumptions: Appreciate that sports representation is one facet of disability representation, not universal. ✨ Support Individual Choices: Encourage inclusivity by respecting personal preferences and aspirations. Celebrating Diversity: Let's celebrate the achievements of Paralympic athletes while respecting the diversity of paths and passions within the disabled community. #ThursdayThoughts #Paralympics #DisabilityRepresentation #Inclusion ID: Text reading 'Thursday Thought... FUN FACT: The Paralympic Games began back in the 1948 London Olympic Games, when there was a competition organised for wheelchair athletes named the Stoke Mandeville Games. There were 16 injured servicemen and women who took part in archery competitions. Eventually, this competition evolved into the Paralympic Games, which first took place in Rome, Italy, in 1960. This was a milestone event, and over 400 athletes from 23 countries took part. Katie Kelly, who has been an invaluable member of the Achieve Australia Board since April 2023, will be competing in the upcoming Paralympics. Three weeks have passed since the close of the Paralympic Games in Paris, a Games that International Paralympic Committee President, Andrew Parsons, hoped would start an ‘inclusion revolution’. But as the excitement of the Games start to fade, we need to ensure this vision and momentum are not forgotten. The Paralympics are a show of extraordinary athleticism, but also a powerful reminder that true inclusion must extend beyond sports - into every aspect of life, including financial services. While Paris worked to upgrade transport, venues, and public spaces for accessibility, there’s an equally urgent need for fintech to improve the digital accessibility of their financial services. The 135 million disabled people across Europe still face barriers to accessing banking and payments services. Inaccessible digital platforms, restrictive authentication methods, and limited compatibility with assistive technologies hamper the financial independence of many with disabilities. Paris 2024 set a new standard for disability inclusion, but access to fintech products and services remains a major challenge. Now is the time for the industry to step up - creating truly inclusive products, improving customer support, and developing solutions designed with disability needs at their core. The Paralympic Games have shown us what’s possible when barriers are broken down. As we remember the incredible achievements of these athletes, let’s ensure fintech reflects the same spirit of accessibility and creates a future where everyone, regardless of disability, has equal access to financial empowerment. We share more thoughts on the Paralympic legacy in our latest Project Nemo blog post. How do we ensure that the momentum of the Games is not lost for another 4 years? #FinancialInclusion #FintechForAll #DisabilityInclusion ID: A close-up image of a disabled runner in the starting blocks. Today, on Children's Day, I'm reminded of the powerful role sports play in the development of young minds. From fostering teamwork to building resilience, the benefits are endless. In my work with organizations like the Ministry of National Education and Youth, Fédération Léo Lagrange, and Gimnasiarca gestión deportiva y formación SL, I've seen firsthand how sports initiatives can transform lives. Our projects, involving hundreds of children and young adults, have not only promoted inclusion but also instilled valuable life skills and healthier habits. Sports have a unique ability to inspire and empower. For me, sport-base work is incredibly important. With several years of experience promoting and fostering youth sports, I truly celebrate initiatives by the UEFA Foundation for Children and the International Olympic Committee – IOC. Their efforts to champion children's rights to play, grow, and thrive are invaluable!! The Paralympic Games, like the Olympics, are often the high point of an athletes career. But competing at such an elite level requires extraordinary dedication and investment of time and resources. In all the tension and drama of the Games it is easy to forget that athletes are also workers and, outside competition, they still need to earn a living and are entitled to the same rights and protections as any other worker. So, what is life like as a Paralympic athlete? How do elite sports-people balance the demands of sporting excellence with earning a living? And how do the Paralympic Games promote disability inclusion? 🎧Have a listen at our new podcast episode: https://ow.ly/yzY950TckT0
