“I think this book was written for me.” I declared this several times during my reading of "Range" by David Epstein, who asks readers to grapple with the importance and utility of specialization. But this book does not purport to validate generalists’ feelings or diminish specialists. In "Range," Epstein argues that people who bring their diversity of experiences, skills, and thinking to problems are those who create environments where innovation thrives. "Range" isn’t a professional development book, or a book centered on the workplace. Yet, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough as a resource for development and reflection. ✅️ For managers looking to rethink old notions… This book is an excellent choice for managers, especially those who are responsible for hiring and assembling teams. "Range" is engaging, with Epstein using familiar examples to help the reader see how too much emphasis on experience and specialization can lead to narrow thinking, siloed work, and conditions that stifle creativity and innovation. After reading this book, as you’re searching for the right candidate for a role or the right employees to assign an important project, ask yourself, “What special skills or outsider advantage does this individual bring that I may be overlooking?” ✅️ For people starting out, or starting over, in their career… Working people are met with plenty of messaging that tells them veering from a set plan or path is a waste of time or a downright failure. What makes "Range" a refreshing read are the examples that illustrate it’s actually imperative to pursue activities that inspire you, cultivate a diversity of experiences, and “fail.” Ultimately, Epstein’s biggest piece of advice is simple: Don’t feel behind. (pg. 290) I think that’s a beautiful reminder, because you don’t know yet how vital every step of your journey has been so far. Moreover, you can’t know which experiences have given you exactly the insight you’ll need in the future. So, trust your abilities and intuition more, and stress your resume less. 📚 What have you read lately that made you think about something in a new way, or made you reframe your previous experiences and reconsider what they’ve taught you? Check out "Range" at your local library or preferred bookseller and let me know what you think. And drop your recommendations for me below.👇 #MCReviews #Professionaldevelopment
