We always assume organisations default position is to protect their data and by association, cyber resilience should be a priority. Sadly, it seems we still have a long way to go to embed data protection and security into our core business activities. With government moving towards guidance and the notion of "security by design" we're seeing a significant gap relating to organisations determining what is good enough. This is where certifications help as they provide a roadmap of good practice and via the certification process, verification. For the legal sector, look to LOCS:23 and ISO 27001 which as a pair work very well together. LOCS:23 is an ICO approved GDPR Certification Scheme (ADISA is the certifying body and working with UKAS at present) so compliance to UK GDPR can be verified, and ISO 27001 is the best utilitarian security certification available provide a roadmap for organisations to build security into business as usual. https://lnkd.in/dDSWkgNT

This report is from 2023 but the guidance is still very relevant. Our internal vulnerability data suggests that smaller legal firms are often behind on critical security patches and best practices. I've been instructed by, and worked in, and with, law firms for longer than I care to remember. The sensitivity of the work and information is often of the highest order, but I do worry about the sometimes siloed and old fashioned ways of working and underlying systems that can introduce risk. A timely reminder here then from the NCSC for law firms to take a firm hold of their information risk and cyber risk postures. Having picked up another client in the Legal sector last week, thought this seemed like good timing (updated from the 2018 report). 'The volume of sensitive information and the sums of money firms often handle can make them particularly attractive targets to attackers.'
