It’s no secret that Black students K-12 receive a disproportionate amount of disciplinary action compared to white students. Whether or not it is conscious, this kind of bias can have a serious impact on Black students’ attitudes toward school and the level of trust they feel with teachers. Our Freedom School program helps young scholars cultivate positive learning associations through its curriculum, activities, and even the way we approach discipline. Decades in Black: The 100-Year History of Black Students at Carnegie Mellon University (1900-2000) For three years, I flew back and forth from Atlanta to Pittsburgh with empty suitcases only to fill them with every yearbook published at Carnegie Mellon University from the early 1900s to 2000. During this time, I searched for information and photos of every Blaxk student I could find in an effort to understand the history of Black students at this institution that began as Carnegie Institure of Technology in 1900 founded by Andrew Carnegie. After three years of research, I wrote and produced this short documentary. It premiered at the 2001 Centennial Homecoming at CMU where for the first time in the history of the university, more than 100 Black students returned to the university and attended a screening of this film that was also part of an awards dinner I organized to honor the oldest living Black student at the time (the late Hazel Stallings) who graduated in the 1920s. Here is the link to the film: https://lnkd.in/ekpaTq5R Copy and paste it into a new browser and you may have to advance it to start. Enjoy! Endnote: I have boxes of unpublished research of so many other Black students who helped make their mark at CMU but I could not add them into this film due to budget constraints. My goal is to publish a coffee table book that honors them all! I, Danielle Mathis, hold the copyright to this film (2001). Please do not use any portion without my written consent/permission. #carnegiemellon #carnegietech #carnegiemellonuniversity #cmu #blackstudents #documentaryfilm #film #research #creativewriting #scriptwriting #history #bookpublishing #andrewcarnegie

#DigThisViz 😍 I always love Alice McKnight, MPH's work, but I'm really feeling this one because of 1) sophisticated black-and-white color scene; 2) historical tile maps (no Alaska or Hawaii until 1959); 3) that cool hashed-out square for "no data"; 4) animated gif showing the functionality (I sometimes use https://gifcap.dev/ for this); 5) timespan notation on the beeswarm; 6) tip of the hat to Varun Jain as Inspiration for his viz on military spend (https://lnkd.in/ej8HNuKG). #Tableau #TableauPublic #BlackHistory #HigherEd #DataViz #DataVisualization
