AI has an answer for everything. I don’t have all the answers but AI continues to have an infinite supply of them. Is it the right answer? I personally believe there is no definitive “right” or “wrong” answer until you have decided on a destination. One of the challenges we face in education is that the system was designed to teach an answer. This has been the destination of education for the last 200+ years. My goal in working with districts is to inspire a new destination. If we can motivate adults to be curious about new ideas and new ways of teaching, then we will see a wave of educators using AI to not just continue the status quo, but to elevate us into the future. And just maybe, we will start to do the same thing for our students and build their curiosity for the world around them. This quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has never been more true in our AI world: “If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea” What do you believe the new destination of school should be? What if every incoming teacher had exposure AND dexterity with AI tools? At Teach For America we’re on the way there fam. This year the majority of incoming corps members took a virtual course designed by The Reinvention Lab at Teach For America (BIG thank you to Ariam Mogos who led the design of the course). The course starts with identifying AI in the world around you and ends with the educators creating their own tool in Playlab AI which is a platform the Reinvention Lab incubated and spun out. This isn’t AI for AI’s sake either. We know that BOTH literacy and dexterity with AI will lead to economic mobility for young people in the future. In other words we know that equipping educators and students to put AI to work on behalf of their goals and communities will help them shape the lives they want. I’m proud to be in this work with TFA at this time. This is one small piece of our larger AI strategy. AI will not solve all of our problems but people who know how to use AI well will solve most of them!
