AI Companies Redefining Creativity "In this new paradigm, the critical skill of the future is not generating new ideas but curating those developed by generative AI. The role of idea curators will be crucial in discerning the most promising concepts, refining them to enhance their viability, and promoting them to gain widespread acceptance. This process can be broken down into three essential elements. "The first step in effective curation is the ability to discern and select the best ideas from a vast pool generated by AI. This requires a deep understanding of the relevant industry, market trends, and the specific needs of the organization. Curators must sift through numerous AI-generated concepts, identifying those with the greatest potential for impact and feasibility. This skill involves critical thinking, industry knowledge, and an intuitive grasp of what will resonate with stakeholders. "Once the best ideas are selected, the next step is editing and refining these concepts. Generative AI, despite its capabilities, can still produce raw and unpolished ideas that require human intervention to reach their full potential. Curators work closely with AI to fine-tune these ideas, addressing any gaps or weaknesses and enhancing their overall coherence and appeal. This collaboration between human and machine ensures that the final product is not only innovative but also practical and implementable. "The final element of curation involves promoting the refined idea to ensure it gains traction and buy-in from key stakeholders. This requires excellent communication and persuasion skills, as curators must present the idea compellingly and convincingly, relying on materials prepared with the help of Gen AI. They must also navigate organizational dynamics, securing support from decision-makers and aligning the idea with the strategic goals of the company."

What I'm reading today. "Promoting environmental healing, reducing gun violence and accepting responsibility for health and social and racial equity have one thing in common: They can contribute to a more peaceful world.  The tenets of design justice and sustainable design can stimulate social responsibility. Social responsibility is foundational to policies and environments that support health and well-being, which in turn impact personal and interpersonal peace." YES. I find my work in peace innovation has broader beyond its initial intellectual works in persuasive technology and behavior design. It sits at the intersection of urban planning, public health, architecture, product design, designing with intent, ethics, and safety. All of this means that any people, skills, talents and abilities are necessary to create the peaceful, just world we hope to inhabit. It's not rocket science. cc Mardelle Shepley

Understanding the deep-rooted interconnection between patriarchy, colonization, capitalism, and the endangerment of the human species is essential to truly grasping what we are doing to ourselves and our planet. Three months ago, I first announced my work on best practices for read aloud on the Web with a repo documenting voices across 14 languages: https://lnkd.in/e4spn2-S This project has continued to move forward and now includes: • support for 30 languages • it documents 500+ voices across all major platforms and browsers • as well as 60+ voices to avoid It's safe to say that before the end of the year, all 43 langues available on Windows and macOS will be supported. In addition to this work, I'm proud to announce that thanks to the European Digital Reading Lab's help, these voices and best practices for voice selection will be available as a TypeScript library very soon: https://readium.org/speech The initial version of the library will be released later this month (a draft PR is available if you'd like to take a peek), but a demo is already available at https://lnkd.in/emTsk6Ym It will power a brand new voice selector component in Thorium 3.1 and will be the first piece of code shared with Readium Web. As I continue to document best practices, this project will gradually extend to fully cover read aloud support on the Web. Despite all these good news, I remain wary of the situation for Web developers and end users. After working for several months with all the various APIs dedicated to TTS, I remain unpleasantly surprised by the inconsistencies between the Web Speech API, SSML and CSS Speech. Overall voice quality and language availability is constantly going up, but these advances are unevenly distributed. Apple and Google are investing heavily in high quality voices for Siri and Gemini, but they're not available to Web developers (or native ones). Microsoft has by far the best support for languages and regional variations, but none of this is available either (unless you're using Edge or using the Azure API, which doesn't work offline). ChromeOS is the only platform that has improved availability for high quality voices that are usable offline, but things remain very buggy and unreliable. Worse, Safari has a number of bugs that can completely break support for read aloud. Since it remains the only option on iOS/iPadOS, it means that users are stuck with low quality voices at best, with very limited options. As I complete my work on voice selection, I'll continue to document these issues and extend my focus to the other pieces of the puzzle. But with the EU Accessibility Act rollout in less than a year, I think it's time to hold these platforms accountable. #readaloud #TTS #a11y #accessibility #Web

Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day! Ensuring accessibility isn't just about meeting compliance standards – it's about creating a more inclusive experience for everyone. Okeenea creates more accessible spaces by working with disabled folks to design solutions, such as their wayfinding app Evelity. I'm so passionate about accessibility because it has made my life infinitely easier. So, while GAAD is focused on digital content, I want to share some of the accommodations I use regularly that make it possible for me to not only exist in certain spaces, but really to participate fully: - Captions: Having captions for videos ensures that I can access them when it’s most convenient for me – whether that’s when I’m traveling, taking a break at the grocery store, or checking my phone before bed. Honestly, I’m also just really sensitive to sound, so I rarely have the volume up on my phone. - Alt text and image descriptions: Being able to ‘read’ what an image shows is incredibly helpful, especially for images without good color contrast or that use ‘fun’ fonts that are hard to read – and for gifs! This can help me still engage with content when I’m having a migraine or another sensory related issue. I love gifs, but y’all sometimes my brain literally hurts looking at them. And, for some people, gifs can potentially trigger a seizure. - Dark mode: Usually, being able to access websites and apps that use a dark background can help me avoid sensory issues or migraines. That’s not always the case, but that’s also why I use apps and programs to adjust the brightness on all of my devices. - Low-scent or scent-free spaces: One of my health issues means my body reacts to scents and perfumes in the same way it does to allergens – by sending me into mild anaphylaxis. This is generally something I can manage pretty well with medications… but there are certain scents that are much worse for me, like Axe body spray. (It’s not just scents that do this, but they’re the most common offenders out in the wild.) - Wheelchair access when covering long distances: If I hike, I am really mindful of how much I can push myself in that setting and still have the fuel to get back to the car. But the airport is a completely different story. When I fly, I almost always get a wheelchair assist from the check-in desk to my gate. Trying to hurry across long distances is something that really bothers my joints and means I have easily a week of recovery time. Other accessibility tools I use: - Fidget devices - Noise-canceling headphones - Tinted glasses & blue-blocking glasses - Temperature adjustments - Standing desks and other tools that are ergonomic for my body (not necessarily labeled as generally ergonomic) - A neck brace, joint braces, and pain relieving aids - Remote working Do you use accessibility tools? Collaborating for Equity Through Community-Built Tools We’re excited to announce the launch of the Intersectional Dashboard Design Cohort, a collaboration between Women's Funding Network (WFN), Candid, and members of Women’s Funding Network. Together, we’re building an intersectional dashboard that provides an in-depth look at nonprofit leadership trends in the context of race and gender, making this data publicly accessible to all. This project is grounded in the feminist idea that data and data gaps aren’t neutral—rather, they reflect the structures of power, priorities, and inequality from which they emerge. The strength of this work comes from the expertise and perspectives of the cohort members, whose backgrounds span advocacy, data analysis, leadership, evaluation, and equity-focused research. Nonprofits make up 10% of the U.S. workforce, yet the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) only releases data about the nonprofit sector every five years—and without the comprehensive demographic analysis available in quarterly and annual reports generated about the private sector. Together, this talented team will build a tool to meet a community need to apply an intersectional lens to data analysis and bring visibility to disparities within the nonprofit sector that are often masked by aggregated data. With data sourced from the Demographics via Candid dataset, the tool will provide funders, researchers, and nonprofits with a quantitative baseline to evaluate and build upon equity strategies. Work on the project will begin in November 2024 and will be featured at the upcoming UN World Data Forum in Medellín, Colombia.
