This Monday, July 2nd, we are excited to launch the first in a series of interactive dialogue sessions on climate change awareness and action, in partnership with the Open Dialogues International Foundation We are honored to have been selected, along with 3 other organizations, to hold these vital dialogues in the DRC. This is an incredible opportunity to create a safe and inclusive space for rural women to share their valuable perspectives, concerns, and ideas on this critical issue. In Kabare South-Kivu, girls and women from the Chinjoma community will come together to share their valuable perspectives, concerns, and ideas on the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to the climate crisis. During the sessions, we will not only listen and gather the participants' insights but also work to raise awareness and engage them in practical actions to protect the environment and manage resources responsibly. We are particularly excited to collaborate with MatumainiEntreprise they will introduce the young women to their innovative YASA product – ecological briquettes made from agricultural waste and recycled paper. This sustainable alternative to traditional cooking methods using wood can help address deforestation and promote eco-friendly practices. #SDGTuesday Goal 2: Zero Hunger 🌍 Achieving zero hunger by 2030 is crucial for sustainable development. Across the globe in 2024, as many as 309 million people are facing acute levels of food insecurity in 71 countries, according to World Food Programme. This means there is a need to invest in sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring equitable access to resources and addressing the nutritional needs of vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women 🍽️ ✅. Germany 🇩🇪 invests a lot in order to reach this goal and the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through interministerial cooperation, the German Government 🇩🇪 has established seven “transformation teams” that focus on various aspects of sustainable development, including food security and nutrition 🍀 . The Transparency Portal by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) enhances access to crucial data, promoting accountability in their global initiatives 📊🔍. While global funding reached ~$78 to $91 billion by 2022, the goal of mobilizing $200 billion annually by 2030 under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework feels distant. ❗️What’s more troubling is the nature of these funds: much of it in the form of loans to developing nations, adding to their debt burdens, while grant-based support remains stagnant. Switzerland falls from 15th to 22nd place in the Sustainable Development Solutions Network's Sustainable Development Report, published today. Our country is only in the green zone for SDG 1 (no poverty) while not on track for any of the others. Globally, no #SDG is on track to be achieved by 2030. In Switzerland, progress has been made in many areas, but it is too slow to achieve the #SDGs. Switzerland is one of the worst countries in terms of #spillovers, i.e. negative impacts on the SDGs in other countries. It now ranks 163rd out of 167, with negative impacts including emissions caused by imports and profit shifting by multinationals, among others. 'Urgent action on clean cooking is no less than a life-and-death matter for millions on women, especially in Africa, where the number of people relying on polluting cooking fuels and stoves continues to rise. That’s why our organisations are working together, and with other leaders across Africa and beyond, to address this crisis. On 14 May, the IEA and the African Development Bank will host a high-level Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, supported by the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), to dramatically accelerate commitments on finance, policy, and collaboration efforts to tackle the troubling lack of clean cooking deployment. Co-chaired by the President of Tanzania and the Prime Minister of Norway, the Summit will work towards three priority outcomes: Increasing commitments to clean cooking from public and private funders with the aim of reaching USD 4 billion of mobilised capital investments annually from now to 2030. Cementing clean cooking as a global priority that leads to the development of ambitious strategies with enabling policy environments. Supporting multi-stakeholder partnerships on clean cooking access at the country level and removing barriers to the growth of clean cooking across the continent.'

🌍 Africa’s Green Future: Tackling Energy, Jobs, and Sustainability 🌱 During a recent podcast interview, our Director, Ciara Marie Remerscheid sat down with Watson Michael to reflect on some of the most pressing issues facing Africa in the climate and energy space: 1️⃣ Africa contributes less than 4% of global carbon emissions yet receives only 3% of global clean energy funding. Meanwhile, over 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity. It’s clear that we need a massive shift in global investment to match Africa’s clean energy potential and address energy poverty. 2️⃣ The International Energy Agency (IEA) & African Development Bank Group estimate that Africa needs over $199B in yearly investments by 2030 to meet its climate and energy access goals. The challenge? Mobilizing and aligning capital, improving infrastructure, and fostering public-private partnerships are critical. 3️⃣ Our research with FSD Africa predicts the creation of 3.3 million green jobs by 2030. These opportunities span renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and more, driving inclusive growth and addressing skills gaps. 4️⃣ Sustainable farming in Africa is crucial, especially as countries like Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s largest cocoa producers, face climate and disease challenges. Agroforestry and resilient crops will be key in securing the future of African agriculture. 5️⃣ Deforestation, gender equality, and water scarcity are deeply interconnected. Women, in particular, are often most affected by these issues. Empowering women, protecting forests, and ensuring water access are vital to sustainable development. African Development Bank Group President Dr Akinwumi Adesina will co-chair the upcoming Summit on #CleanCooking in Africa alongside President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, and International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol. "President Suluhu Hassan, Prime Minister Støre and I are delighted to welcome President Adesina as a co-chair for the Summit,” said Dr Birol. “The African Development Bank has been involved in early preparations and has been a critical partner for the IEA on the issue of clean cooking. Its support will be an invaluable addition to this major Summit, which aims to deliver strong policy recommendations and additional financial commitments, while cementing clean cooking as a global priority for years to come." An estimated four in five Africans cook their meals over open fires and traditional stoves, using wood, charcoal, animal dung and other polluting fuels. The practice has devastating impacts on health, gender equality, and the environment, with 600,000 Africans, mainly women and children, dying annually from indoor pollution. Dr Adesina said: “Access to clean cooking isn’t merely an energy issue. It is a fundamental human right, and a promise for a healthier, and more sustainable future. The African Development Bank is committed to tackling this challenge head-on, and I am therefore pleased to co-chair the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa alongside distinguished global leaders.” Last year, the IEA and the African Development Bank co-authored a major report on clean cooking, ‘A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All.’ Together with the African Union and Clean Cooking Alliance, they launched the Africa Clean Cooking Consortium at the #COP28 climate change conference in Dubai last year.
