I hear from many doctoral learners that they are frustrated with their Committee or the doctoral process or that they are lonely and need a community. It can be hard to navigate without some help. Getting a doctorate degree is unlike any degree that one gets in their life. It feels like a cross between writing a science experiment and a book. The Academic writing, alone, is formal and structured, which is a throwback to the writing we learned in 3rd grade. We have to unlearn years of bad writing habits and conform to the world of Academia, with all of those darn topic and closing sentences! We can even talk about editing and reediting. That takes a special skillset. We haven't even touched the content and the research. In the virtual environment - did I say it can be really lonely? If you are a doctoral student looking for a community that focuses on positivity, celebration, collaboration, and learning, join us at the Dissertation e-Collaborative Community on FB - its free to join. Be sure to answer all of the questions as we have tight security that only allows doctoral students in. We offer a two-hour once a month community call that will definitely give you the motivation to persist for 30 more days - we lovingly call it 'nudging' toward graduation. See you in the community! https://lnkd.in/gYGkkBXS

What an honour it was to share the 'stage' with my co-editors and Dr. Alex Ketchum last week! Dr. Ketchum's presentation was so practically and emotionally grounded - listening to her speak provided actionable advice and provided me with inspiration to keep doing innovative and creative community-based work - the perfect setting to debut our handbook! The biggest take away for me from this session: joy matters. Working in many areas of social justice is undoubtedly heavy work; even when the research is flowing and I am hitting milestones, the topic and human impacts mean it's rarely an 'easy' day. In the extractive setting that we are expected to produce research why not follow up the endless question: "will my research have impact" with a more personal: "am I sharing my work in a form that will bring me intrinsic joy". Yes I love writing a good article, but I adore working alongside community to create art - Dr. Ketchum offered a powerful reminder that following joy and experimenting with fun as we turn to knowledge production can keep our fires flaring and sustain this work in truly meaningful ways.
It was a great joy to discuss our recent publication yesterday as part of Dr. Alex Ketchum’s workshop on public scholarship. Co-edited by myself, Emily R Blyth, and Jihyun Park, “Creative Approaches to Community-Engaged Research” was one of the highlights of my Summer. This handbook offers readers a collection of stories and insights, showcasing the broad range of possibilities within community-engaged research (CER). Chapter 1 describes frameworks and approaches to creative CER. Chapter 2 offers useful methods and tools, and Chapter 3 introduces case studies and lessons learned from various projects. I have a piece in chapter 2, introducing a tool for participatory risk and benefit assessment in CER. There are several aspects of this publication that I’m particularly proud of: 1. Although the handbook is written in an academic setting, we aimed to reach beyond academia. We were intentional about using accessible language and design throughout, keeping the articles short, and providing free online and print copies. 2. This handbook traverses disciplinary boundaries and gives a platform to early-career scholars. All first authors are doctoral or Master’s students from diverse fields, including communication, education, health sciences, political science, psychology, and interactive arts and technology. This is thanks to the SFU Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) fellowship, which connected us. 3. Coherence was not solely the editors' responsibility in working with individual authors; it was a shared effort. We implemented an open peer review process where names were disclosed on both sides, and all authors could see all comments. After the first round of reviews, the authors came together to exchange ideas and align on shared directions for the next revisions.. 4. Lastly, my wonderful co-editors, their ethical and equity-oriented considerations, as well as the friendship we developed through this work were incredibly special to me. I can’t imagine working with any other team. Whether you are a community-based practitioner, an academic, or a member of a community group, whether you are at the early stages of considering community-engaged research in your work or seasoned in this approach but looking for some inspiration, I would love to invite you to read this handbook and let us know what you think. Check it out online, or pick up a hard copy at CERi’s office! #community_engaged_research #open_scholarship #open_peer_review

Only few hours left to register for the free webinar today! When I attended the MIT Open House for incoming students, I saw that almost everyone who was admitted had a strong research profile. Building a strong research profile is one of the best ways to strengthen your chances of getting into top universities. At the heart of a strong research profile, is the art of writing an impactful paper. The better you write the paper, the better are the journals where it would get accepted and the better your profile would look like. At Videsh: we are conducting a FREE workshop today (Tuesday), 7pm IST titled "Publish independent research: A step-by-step guide”. In this free workshop, we will cover the following: 1) How to plan your timeline such that you can realistically publish paper(s) or at least get them in the review stage? 2) Review papers, research articles, preprints, and conference presentations/proceedings publications 3) How to publish your first paper from scratch? How to identify value in your past or ongoing projects? 4) How to find collaborators to work on your research problem statements? 5) Finer details -How many papers to publish? Does number matter? -Impact of first-author vs second-author papers -Impact factor of the journal to target -Novelty of the work 6) What is our Long Term Mentorship Program (LTM)? -How have students benefitted from it? -What was the success of LTM in 2023? -How can you benefit from it? Here is the link to register for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/g8nFsSSD Join us on this workshop, and build a solid mental map for building your research profile in the upcoming months.

Don’t miss our webinar on ten key points that prospective doctoral students should consider prior to embarking on such a journey, namely: 1. Structuredness of the Programme 2. Research Scoping 3. Mastering the Trio 4. Supportive Network 5. Research Methods 6. Benchmarking Opportunities 7. Progress Measurement 8. The Element of Time 9. Viva Preparation 10. The Aftermath of the Doctorate During this webinar we’ll engage in discussion around ten guiding points prospective doctoral students should consider prior to embarking on such a journey. For you to have a better understanding about what to expect at the webinar we are going to post a teaser for each of the ten key points in the days ahead. Today we are starting with: # 1 Structuredness of the Programme: Theoretical coursework versus applied learning approaches versus self-directed learning The first provides the theoretical base, applied learning as the second trains the skills that are needed, while self-directed learning as the third will develop your independent scientific research capabilities. Therefore, it is critical to understand what is developed when, where and how within your doctoral programme of choice. Most of the programmes provide some sort of theoretical coursework, but how do they support you in your applied learning once you are undertaking the research? And equally important, how do they nurture the uptake of the applied learning into self-directed independent learning and progression? That’s it for today and we are looking forward seeing you tomorrow on: # 2 Research Scoping: the thin line between freedom of choice and getting overwhelmed and stuck. 🔗 Register Here https://lnkd.in/egE97hVW #PhDLife #DBA #HigherEducation #AcademicJourney #Webinar #Research #DoctorateHub FOLLOW DoctorateHub for more insights on the doctorate research journey!
