The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) has recognised the need for organised, systemic reform in the construction industry to reduce the carbon impact of the sector and fulfil Australia’s net zero ambitions, today releasing a pivotal report detailing the subject. 🏗️ 🏠 🌍 The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) has recognised the need for organised, systemic reform in the construction industry to reduce the carbon impact of the sector and fulfil Australia’s net zero ambitions, today releasing a pivotal report detailing the subject. Multi-pronged approach needed ACA CEO Jon Davies said construction was a ‘hard to abate’ sector and while electrification was the preferred decarbonisation pathway, technology constraints meant this would not be available in the short to medium term. “We need to rapidly adopt low carbon liquid fuels to bridge the gap until electric options mature and the best transition fuel for the construction industry is renewable diesel,” Davies said. “ACA is calling for direct government policy intervention to rapidly accelerate both the supply and demand for renewable diesel in Australia. “Renewable diesel enables necessary emission reductions in the short term without modifications to existing machinery. “The problem is, there is currently no domestic renewable diesel production in Australia - this reflects a policy vacuum that lags other countries significantly. “Importing renewable diesel is cost prohibitive relative to mineral diesel, making adoption a competitive disadvantage.” The ACA’s report suggests a domestic renewable diesel industry would have far-reaching benefits beyond decarbonisation of the construction industry – the organisation is urging the Federal Government to pursue a low-carbon liquid fuel policy to chart a course for a sustainable domestic renewable diesel industry. This is the new EU Directive on energy performance for buildings with the goal of decarbonize the building stock (New Construction and Existing) by 2050. The Directive is mandatory but allows governments to decide on the renovation measures best-suited to their specific national context (historic buildings can be exempt). https://lnkd.in/gmSYHEWG

The Scottish Government has published its consultation on proposed changes to energy and environmental standards for building regulations in Scotland, also know as the Scottish equivalent to the Passivhaus standard. This is the first of two consultations on new rules to improve the energy and environmental performance of new buildings, with this phase seeking views on the technical, commercial and policy implications of the proposed changes.   But do they go far enough? More of us are becoming aware of Net Zero carbon targets, but do we know what’s producing carbon and what needs to be done to reduce it? Well, construction is a massive contributor, and not just the energy inefficient houses most of us live in. NorDan UK Ltd point out that any changes to building regulations to make homes more energy and warmer to reduce operational carbon, are missing the point if they don’t tackle embodied carbon which is produced when materials are made and properties are built. It’s the elephant in the room.

Currently embodied carbon is not regulated in the UK construction sector, even though it can account for more than half of the whole life emissions for a new project. 'Part Z' is an industry initiative that advocates making embodied carbon assessments mandatory in the building regulations. Supporting this proposal will be of interest to climate emergency signatories and others working in the built environment. Led by our Construction Research Centre, we are working with collaborators to develop new low-carbon guidelines, specifications and research that can help inform and advance future regulatory solutions. Ongoing activities include updates to low-carbon solutions in the Canadian National Master Construction Specification (NMS), as well as the development of a guideline to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in federally funded construction projects. As part of this platform, we’re also undertaking a series of initiatives to support the development of low-carbon construction tools, products and services through our Low Carbon Built Environment Challenge program. We’re also helping the Canadian construction industry modernize practices through our Construction Sector Digitalization and Productivity Challenge program.
