It’s Time to Retire the Term “User” The proliferation of #AI means we need a new word. “Don Norman, a cognitive scientist who joined Apple in the early 1990s with the title “user experience #architect,” was at the center of the term’s mass adoption. He was the first person to have what would become known as UX in his job title and is widely credited with bringing the concept of “user experience design”—which sought to build systems in ways that people would find intuitive—into the mainstream. Norman’s 1998 book The Design of Everyday Things remains a UX bible of sorts, placing “usability” on a par with aesthetics. Norman, now 88, explained to me that the term “user” proliferated in part because early computer technologists mistakenly assumed that people were kind of like machines. “The user was simply another component,” he said. “We didn’t think of them as a person—we thought of [them] as part of a system.” So early user experience design didn’t seek to make human-computer interactions “user friendly,” per se. The objective was to encourage people to complete tasks quickly and efficiently. People and their computers were just two parts of the larger systems being built by tech companies, which operated by their own rules and in pursuit of their own agendas. What Could the 2024 U.S. Election Mean for the Architecture Industry? 🌍 With the election fast approaching, architecture firms in the U.S. may see significant impacts depending on the outcome. Here’s a quick look at what a Trump or Harris administration might bring to the table: 🔹 For Large-Scale, Private Sector, and Industrial Projects: A Trump win could mean fewer regulatory barriers and lower corporate taxes, which might create a more business-friendly environment for private sector projects. The focus on deregulation could make approvals faster for industrial facilities and high-rise commercial developments. However, Trump’s trade policies and tariffs on materials like steel and aluminum could drive up construction costs, which might squeeze budgets on large-scale projects. 🔹 For Sustainable, Public, and Residential Projects: Harris could provide architects in this space with more support for sustainable, eco-friendly projects! Likely expansions in green funding and affordable housing would open doors for firms working on energy-efficient buildings, public transit, and low-income housing. Harris’s policies would likely bring stricter environmental regulations, which could increase compliance costs but also push innovation in sustainable design. Plus, an increase in funding for public infrastructure could mean more projects in education, healthcare, and urban development.

He's from Chile, a country where energy is scarce. Conserving energy is on everyone's mind! 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 In Chile and places like Germany, energy efficiency is part of life. Buildings are designed to save energy. It’s a necessity. But in the U.S.? Many old buildings leak heat like crazy. Ever cracked open a window because the boiler runs non-stop? It’s mind-boggling to those from energy-conscious countries. 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 With new regulations and a focus on sustainability, the lessons Alex learned in Chile are now critical. Modern technologies and techniques, like Passive House, are game changers. Retrofits to make old buildings energy-efficient? It's a whole new world and a fascinating challenge. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Alex finds retrofitting old buildings to be incredibly motivating. It’s about fixing the past to build a sustainable future.
