Sowing Seeds of Knowledge: MES Bellville Work Readiness beneficiaries Get Hands-On Gardening Experience. On October 23rd, 2024, the EnviroCon Training Specialist Company did Agricultural & Environmental Skills Development Training through a one-day garden workshop at the MES (Mould Empower Serve) Bellville Safe Space. The training provided valuable expertise and support to our Work Readiness team. The workshop was part of a broader initiative following EnviroCon’s assistance in applying for an AgriSETA grant and securing learnerships Plant Production (A level 1 internship) for our Work Readiness beneficiaries for 2025. Thirteen of our Work Readiness programme beneficiaries participated in the workshop. They acquired practical skills which they can utilize in our MES garden and in their own spaces, this has taught them the value of gardening. EnviroCon’s experienced trainers Esti Du Toit and Ayakha Tshayingwe led the group through various aspects of gardening, from understanding the different types of gardens to essential techniques such as plant propagation skills. Learners explored both sexual and asexual methods, where they utilized cuttings from Portulacaria afra, commonly known as Spekboom, a popular, eco-friendly species. “All the learners demonstrated genuine interest in the program and showcased remarkable teamwork. What's more, I had the opportunity to learn valuable insights from each of them, highlighting the workshop's significance in fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and growth. The collective energy and dedication made the day truly unforgettable.’ said Ayakha. Three of our attendees have already applied for the Plant Production internship, with several more expressing interest. This is a testament to the impact of the workshop, which equipped participants with the knowledge and confidence to explore opportunities in the agricultural sector. After a quick lunch break, everyone headed outside to put their newfound knowledge to the test. Participants planted crop seedlings supplied by EnviroCon, which included a variety of seeds such as peppers, spinach, and beets to name a few. The heat from the sun did not slow the team down as they all wanted to contribute to the crop plantation. MES Work Readiness will continue to develop areas of interest such as agriculture to open doors for our clients in the future. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Envirocon, the Greater Tygerberg Partnership and Call2Care, this workshop has not only shared valuable knowledge but has also sown seeds of hope and inspiration for ongoing growth and positive impact. #MouldEmpowerServe #MESCapeTown #WorkReadiness #CommunityImpact #MESPartnerships

📌 WORKING HARD vrs WORKING SMART Once upon a time, in a small village, lived two gardeners, Stephen and Percy. Both were tasked with cultivating a beautiful garden for the village's annual harvest festival. Stephen believed that working hard was the key to success. He spent 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, tending to every detail of his garden. He manually watered each plant, individually pruned every branch, and even hand-picked every weed. Stephens garden was impressive, but he was exhausted. Percy, on the other hand, worked smart. He spent 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, focusing on strategic gardening techniques. He: 📌 Installed an efficient irrigation system. 📌Used compost and mulch to reduce weeds. 📌Implemented a crop rotation plan. 📌 Utilized gardening tools to streamline tasks. Percy's garden flourished with minimal effort. On the day of the festival, the villagers gathered to admire the gardens. Stephen's garden was beautiful, but Percy's garden was breathtaking. His plants were healthier, more vibrant, and produced an abundance of fruits and vegetables. 📌THE LESSON The villagers asked Percy how he achieved such remarkable results. Aquaponics vs. Hydroponics: Which is Right for You? Are you interested in sustainable gardening but unsure whether to dive into aquaponics or hydroponics? Both methods offer innovative solutions for growing plants without soil, but they have unique differences that might sway your decision. Aquaponics combines fish farming and plant cultivation in a symbiotic environment. Fish waste provides essential nutrients for plants, while plants naturally filter and clean the water for the fish. This closed-loop system is highly efficient and eco-friendly, promoting a balanced ecosystem. Hydroponics, on the other hand, focuses solely on growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution. Without the need for fish, hydroponics allows for more precise control over nutrient levels, making it easier to optimize plant growth and yields. Key Differences: - Nutrient Source: Aquaponics relies on fish waste, while hydroponics uses a tailored nutrient solution. - Maintenance: Hydroponics requires regular monitoring and adjustment of nutrient levels, whereas aquaponics needs attention to both fish and plants. - Environmental Impact: Aquaponics is a more sustainable option, integrating fish and plant cultivation in a closed-loop system. Whether you choose aquaponics or hydroponics, both methods offer exciting opportunities to grow fresh, healthy plants in an eco-friendly manner. Dive into the world of soilless gardening and discover the best fit for your green thumb!
