A recent study, ECLIF3, showed that using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) significantly reduces soot particles and contrail ice crystals compared to conventional jet fuel. Conducted by Airbus, Rolls-Royce, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Neste, the study found a 56% reduction in ice crystals, which could lessen the climate-warming effects of contrails. Experts from Neste, DLR, Airbus, and Rolls-Royce highlighted SAF's critical role in mitigating aviation's climate impact and advancing towards net-zero #CO2 emissions. Previous research also supports the benefits of #SAF, with studies showing a 50% blend can reduce ice crystal contrails by up to 70%. 🍃 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/en6cSsXW

EXTENDED DEADLINE: Focus Issue on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and Technologies for Zero-Carbon Flight in the SAE International Journal of Aerospace. Deadline: November 30, 2024 The pressing need to combat climate change and reduce aviation's carbon footprint has accelerated the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). These eco-friendly fuels are crucial for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. International initiatives and regulations are driving the industry towards adopting SAFs and other carbon-neutral technologies. SAFs, derived from various feedstocks, can be blended with traditional fossil fuels and used in current aircraft and infrastructure with minimal modifications, potentially replacing conventional jet fuels for all flight types. Additionally, the shift to carbon-neutral and carbon-zero fuels will necessitate significant changes in aircraft technology, propulsion systems (such as electric, hydrogen, or hybrid), and ground support infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency in aviation. Guest Editors: Yaseen Zaidi (University of the West of England Student Village, UK); Vilius Portapas, PhD (University of Nottingham, UK); Arnaud Didey (Neoptera Ltd, UK); Lance Smith (RTX, USA) Editor-in-Chief: Ravi Rajamani Instructions for submitting your work can be found here: https://sae.to/48EAt7b #aerospace #sustainability #research

In April 2023, the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) welcomed the launch of Sustainable Aviation's (SA) updated Net Zero Carbon Road-Map. This outlined how UK aviation can continue to grow while still meeting the sector's 2050 Net Zero commitments. A follow-up Technical Report released in June provides further rationale, assumptions and data utilised to compile the Road-Map. This report not only explains the depth of evidence behind this publication but also raises the importance of long-term investment in next-generation flight technology. ATI Head of Technology – Sustainability and Strategy, Adam Morton noted how this sector endorsement reflects the essential role of UK, home-grown aircraft technologies alongside better fuels, improved aircraft operations and deployment of carbon removal. 📔 Read the Sustainable Aviation Technical Report here: https://lnkd.in/eAc6vu6N #sustainability #netzero #netzerocarbon #aviation #aerospace

The results of a European study into the impact of a widebody jet flown with 100% sustainable aviation fuel show a substantial 56% reduction in the number of contrail ice crystals produced by unblended SAF compared to Jet A-1 fuel, reports Tony Harrington for GreenAir News. The project, involving Airbus, Rolls-Royce, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and SAF producer Neste, was the third stage of the Emission and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuels (#ECLIF) programme, with in-flight and ground emissions tests taking place in 2021. They worked together to quantify the reduction in engine soot particles produced by a Rolls-Royce powered Airbus A350 fuelled by Neste and trailed by a DLR research aircraft. In certain weather conditions, airborne vapour freezes around soot particles emitted by aircraft engines, creating cloudy canopies of ice crystals which can trap heat in the atmosphere. #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel #aviationnonco2 Mark Pilling Christiane Voigt Hartwig Hagena Mark Bentall Alexander Kueper Alan Newby Philippe Gmerek Falk Dambowsky Heiko Stolzke Matteo Mirolo Florian Allroggen Steven Barrett Vincent de Haes Carlos López de la Osa Dimitar Nikov Marc Shapiro Jason Taylor Estuaire Jonathon Counsell Adam Durant International Air Transport Association (IATA) Marie Owens Thomsen Jill Blickstein Andrew Chen Dr. Alejandro Block Hemant Mistry Sarah Wilkin Roger Gardner https://lnkd.in/eD357-ap

The D328 UpLift aircraft's journey to and back from Oberpfaffenhofen Airport to ILA Berlin on a zero aromatics PtL-proxy fuel marks an important milestone for the possibility of climate-friendly flights! ✈️ The aircraft was powered by a fully synthetic zero aromatics fuel, that could be produced in the future using green hydrogen and a sustainable carbon dioxide source as a Power-to-Liquid (PtL). The combustion of this fuel is expected to reduce the emission of soot particles and the impact of contrails on the climate. 🌍 An extensive flight test campaign with UpLift in the coming months will confirm this for regional aircraft using the D328® as an example and investigate the overall environmental impact of synthetic fuels in real operations. We are grateful to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for providing the footage for this groundbreaking achievement as we revolutionise the future of regional aviation together! #GreenAviation #SustainableFuture #ILA2024 #D328UpLift #ILA24 #PioneeringAerospace #Climate #Sustainability #D328

What is the aviation industry doing to curb the sector's massive climate problem? This is the big question on our minds at #ILA2024. However, despite lots of talk of more efficient planes or even a fully hydrogen powered aircraft in the coming decade, there seems to be little focus on taking truly revolutionary action. This is especially concerning at a time when it should be all hands on deck to combat the rising climate impact of aviation as the sector sees uncontrollable rapid growth.
