✈️Breaking News in Sustainable Aviation🚨
SAE International and EUROCAE have jointly announced the publication of “Hydrogen Fueling Stations for Airports, in Both Gaseous and Liquid Form.” This is the world’s first global guideline for airport hydrogen fueling stations, a game-changer for the aerospace industry.
What’s inside SAE #AIR8466 and EUROCAE #ER034?
1️⃣ Setting Standards for Safety and Performance
Developed collaboratively, these documents set the stage for safe, efficient hydrogen fueling for aircraft of all sizes, including eVTOLs, Regional, Narrow Body, and Wide Body aircraft—even Lighter than Air.
2️⃣ Process Limits Tailored for Hydrogen
From fuel temperature and flow rate to fueling time, the guidelines provide the first industry-wide framework, considering variables like ambient and delivery temperature and storage pressure.
3️⃣ Fueling Categories by Aircraft Type
eVTOLs to Wide Body Aircraft – each category has fueling protocols and flow rate targets, with coupling sizes defined by turnaround time needs.
4️⃣ Flexible Communication Protocols
Whether fueled with or without active communication, SAE AIR8466 covers fueling protocols that prioritize operational adaptability.
Industry Impact
“With existing standards for Jet A-1, but none for hydrogen, SAE AIR8466 / EUROCAE ER034 fills a critical gap in hydrogen fueling safety and efficiency,” said Jesse Schneider, Chair of the SAE AE-5CH Hydrogen Airport Taskgroup. “This guidebook, achieved through collaboration with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, regulators, and hydrogen companies, is the foundation of hydrogen fueling at airports worldwide.”
Key Highlights
• Estimated Onboard Storage Requirements
Storage categories tailored to each aircraft type’s unique hydrogen demands.
• Defined Fueling Speeds
Flow rate guidelines (kg/minute) are now established for optimal airline turnaround times.
• Comprehensive Safety Properties
Covering high-level hydrogen safety properties to ensure safe fueling for gaseous and liquid hydrogen, whether at fixed or mobile stations.
Hydrogen’s Future in Aviation Starts Here
With SAE AIR8466, we’re one step closer to safe, scalable hydrogen aviation fueling worldwide.
