I love how volunteering is a priority at Baptist Health, because volunteering as a team can offer numerous benefits in addition to benefitting your community. Below are my top 3 reasons why you should volunteer with your team on a regular basis: 1. Sense of Purpose and Fulfillment: Volunteering together reveals that sense of purpose and fulfillment we all crave with the added satisfaction of contributing to something bigger than the daily grind. Creating moments that matter and leaving a positive impact have a ripple effect! 2. Walk in the Park: Dog Distraction Class It’s a different kind of walk in the park at See Differently’s weekly dog distraction classes for our pups in training. At these sessions, volunteers guide the pups through various exercises designed to help them stay focused (despite lots of tempting distractions like other dogs, toys, and people). Sofie and Bree from the puppy team lead the class with lots of tips and tricks to keep the students on the right track! Teaching our dogs these skills early on is essential for them to become well-trained and reliable companions. We're looking for more volunteers to help raise and train our next generation of See Differently guide or assistance dogs. We have various volunteering opportunities to suit everyone. Last week I spent a full day with the leadership team of Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg PA. as one of our activities, I’d asked each of PSL’s 30 communities to bring a decorated pickle jar to help us launch The Pickle Challenge for Charity. I said that I would use my own arbitrary and capricious criteria to select winning entries for categories that I would create. I was blown away by their creativity! These are just a few of the contest entries. They weren’t just decorated pickle jars – they were artistic creations! Not only that, many of the participants also had Pickle Free Zone t-shirts, hats, and other paraphernalia. The pickle jar decorating contest is typically the first activity in launching The Pickle Challenge for Charity. Making people more aware of their own negative attitudes, including chronic complaining, is an important step toward creating a more positive Culture of Ownership. The Pickle Challenge is fun, it’s free, and it gives people a soft-touch, lighthearted way to hold themselves and each other to higher standards of behavior at work. JUST DO GOOD - The JBJ Soul Kitchen does just that! Philanthropy isn't just about donating money. Charity isn't about feeling good by giving to others. Paying forward is about showing gratitude for blessings received to enable others with privilege and empower opportunity to do the same for the next person. Jon Bon Jovi (JBJ) is a world famous rock star who is still producing music and doing concert tours. Yet JBJ has been able to do something with the Soul Foundation (started with his wife Dorothea Hurley) and the Soul Kitchen concept that goes far beyond usual philanthropy. The concept of Soul Kitchen is simple yet profoundly meaningful. It's a full service restaurant where you can get a full quality three course meal, served by waiting staff and there are no prices on the menu. Wait no prices, you ask?! Those who can pay, pay $20 for their meal. Those who can't pay, can volunteer to work and pay for their meal. Even JBJ washes dishes at his Soul Kitchen several week day evenings, doing the things that most successful people won't go near. Sometimes, it isn't just about the thought that counts. It is the acts of service that validate them. What is even more remarkable about Soul Kitchen is that JBJ's restaurant (started back in hometown New Jersey) was designed to seat diners with someone they didn't know so they get to know them and in the process something about themselves at the end of the meal. That's truly the heart of building a community where people come together to be fed, not only nourished physically but their souls are connect emotionally. When asked by the interviewer what motivated him to do this, JBJ answered: "We didn't just wake up one day and said 'Lets do good'. We just went out and did good." That for me is how real change in the world can be made. Roots & Wings is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth aging out of foster care. The statistics speak for themselves: - More than 1 in 5 will become homeless within 18 months of emancipating. - Almost 50% of inmates in our prison systems have spent time in the foster care system. - Only half of aged-out foster youth obtain their GED or High School diploma by age 19. - Just 6% go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree. In 2023, Roots & Wings members defied the odds: - 100% have a High School diploma. - 94% were employed. - 88% maintained a savings account. - 81% attended an educational, vocational, or certificate program. That's such a tangible concept to imagine - of course, kids shouldn't have their things in garbage bags. But those ads always make us wonder "What if there were a healthy, familiar grown-up attached to that suitcase?" Isn't that what they really need? At HoganTaylor, generosity and community service are an important part of our culture. Every year, each employee can spend 24 hours of community service to do whatever they are passionate about. This could be: ➡️ Working at a soup kitchen ➡️ Coaching a Little League team ➡️ Volunteering at an animal shelter Over the last few months, our CEO at HoganTaylor, Randy Nail, has emphasized the need for generosity toward not only each other at the firm… … but in our communities as well.
