🌱 Very grateful for this eye-opening article on the climate vulnerability of Caribbean food systems from Daphne Ewing-Chow at Forbes. Taking a close look at the findings of the University of Notre Dame's Global Adaptation Initiative Country Index, Daphne explores the study’s assessment of Caribbean food systems as being “among the most climate vulnerable in the world.” As someone active in agriculture in Jamaica, these insights hit close to home. 🌍 The Country Index lists 189 countries, and assigns rankings based on the climate vulnerability of their food systems, taking into account features such as current food production, malnutrition rates, dependency on imports, etc. Of all CARICOM countries listed in the Index, only two - Trinidad & Tobago and Suriname — ranked in the upper 50th percentile. This is despite the fact that Caribbean countries as a whole are accorded ‘high’ or ‘middle income’ status. The article then gives a comprehensive - and highly sobering - overview of the unique challenges posed by our geographical position in a context of climate change, including heat waves, increased susceptibility to torrential rain and flooding, intensified storm events, and slow onset events such as sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, and ocean acidification. 🚀 My thoughts: ➡️ The revelation of high/upper-middle income classification might surprise many in Jamaica. This observation underscores the discrepancy between official economic classifications and reality of people’s lives. The author is quite right in her observation that: “GDP fails to capture the complex relationship between environmental vulnerabilities, natural disasters, and escalating public debt incurred in securing funds from global markets for climate recovery.” ➡️ The emphasis on modest and ambitious initiatives resonates with our work at Farm Credibly. The Loss and Damage Fund mentioned here, an initiative introduced at COP28 in Dubai, seems to be a promising mechanism to provide assistance to climate-vulnerable nations to navigate the challenges. Exploring the utilisation of grant funding in the Caribbean is crucial, and understanding our role in this context will guide our future endeavours. 🙏 Kudos to the author for shedding light on these critical issues. With any luck poor rankings like these can spur our policy makers to take constructive steps to mitigate these risks and protect present and future citizens of the Caribbean. Do give Daphne’s article a read, and then me know your thoughts in the comments: https://lnkd.in/gGe4Stgz Caribbean Food Systems Are Among The Most Climate Vulnerable Globally
