Your first-mover advantages aren’t likely to last very long, however, since all your competitors can use gen AI in the same way.” #competitiveadvantage

I've always been a fan of Harvard Business Review's insightful articles, but their latest piece on AI is a bit weird. The article argues that because AI is readily available to everyone, individual companies can't attain a long-term competitive advantage from it. My point: AI's potential is both immense and largely undiscovered, so I expected HBR to delve into strategies companies can employ to capture new and differentiating value through AI. Instead, it feels like they've thrown in the towel before the game has even begun. Do you agree with HBR or do you think companies can leverage AI to achieve sustainable competitive advantages?

I feel sometimes decisionmakers are just trying to step over their own shadow, thinking that if they are faster, they will be able to do it… AI first is not a strategy. Implementing AI for the sake of keeping up with a fad, will create more unnecessary complexity, instead of reducing some. Start with a problem and see how AI, or any other technology can help you with it… Here is my opinion of “firsts”: 1st: strategy (a real one, not this fluff) 2nd: people 3rd: ethics 4th: problems 5th: possible solutions to my problem… …and maybe if all are aligned and well defined, and turns out AI tools (they are tools, remember?) can help, then make AI part of the solution to your problems. ✌️ #aifirst #aiadoption #peoplefirst https://lnkd.in/d59QUNMW

The latest Harvard Business Review article argues that while AI will revolutionize industries, it won’t provide a lasting competitive edge. Instead, AI’s value lies in amplifying existing business strengths—especially those difficult for others to replicate. Key Points: - AI creates value but isn’t a sustainable differentiator in the long run. - Early adopters will see gains, but those will diminish as AI becomes more widespread. - Companies with unique, hard-to-replicate assets can leverage AI to enhance their competitive position. What do you think? Is AI genuinely leveling the playing field, or can businesses find a way to maintain a competitive edge using AI innovatively? Check out the complete article and share your thoughts! Tomorrow, I will publish my article, which serves as a counterpoint to say, " Kinda, not really tho" https://lnkd.in/eqp5YUCD

Unlocking the true potential of generative #AI requires companies to undergo profound organizational transformation. As we enter 2024, poised for gen AI to demonstrate its value, it's crucial for businesses to heed the lessons learned from previous digital and AI endeavors. Competitive advantage stems from fostering organizational and technological capabilities that facilitate widespread innovation, deployment, and scalability – essentially, #reconfiguring the #business for decentralized digital and AI #innovation. To truly gain a competitive edge, companies must discern between being a 'taker' – merely utilizing existing tools – a 'shaper' – integrating available models with proprietary data – and a 'maker' – actively constructing LLMs. It's imperative to navigate this landscape with #strategic clarity and foresight...

Value creation is not value capture, this article articulates why AI in its own right will not give your organisation a sustainable competitive advantage over competitors, reason being, AI is levelling the playing field, and hence what's available for you will be most likely available to your competitors. So what should organisations do instead? They should focus on their propitiatory data and leverage AI in extending their existing advantages. Generative AI has the capacity to revolutionize business operations, offering significant value. It enables companies to uncover fresh product opportunities, automate routine decisions, provide tailored professional services, and enhance customer interactions. However, the key question remains: can businesses utilize gen AI to gain a competitive edge? The authors suggest that this is only possible if the company already possesses a unique advantage that AI cannot replicate. In such cases, gen AI can enhance the existing advantage to drive greater value. #AI #BusinessTransformation

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 #𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 #𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝘄 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 #𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆? Imagine an #AI system that processes data at lightning speed. It’s 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, but is it 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲? As AI reshapes our world, we often celebrate its #efficiency. But when was the last time you considered the #efficacy of the AI systems you interact with? We marvel at the speed of computation and the sheer volume of data processing capabilities of modern AI systems. Yet, amidst this celebration of technological competence, a crucial aspect often remains overshadowed—#efficacy. #Efficiency is quantifiable; it’s the impressive figures of reduced time and saved costs. It’s the streamlined processes that speak to the bottom line of businesses and shareholder’s pockets. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲? #Efficacy is the true measure of AI’s success in achieving its intended results. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Only when we align efficacy (do it right) with efficiency (do it economically in time and cost), we achieve the effectiveness (do it well) of AI in real-life applications — beyond the confines of controlled environments. 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸. As we integrate AI into our professional and personal lives, it’s time to shift the conversation. Let’s not just ask how fast or how much, but also how well and to what end. Because when it comes to AI, efficacy is not just a nice-to-have—it’s essential for meaningful progress and sustainable innovation. #AI #Efficiency #Efficacy #Effectiveness

Is it better to adopt every new AI tool as quickly as possible, or to refine and optimize existing systems first? On one hand, rapidly integrating the latest AI technologies can give companies an edge, potentially enhancing efficiency and innovation. On the other, a focus on optimizing what you already have can ensure stability and control, building on a solid foundation. Constant updates can sometimes lead to operational challenges. However, lagging behind can mean missing out on crucial advancements that competitors might leverage. Personally, I tend to opt toward a more balanced approach.

The #AI Revolution: Don't Get Left Behind, But Don't Expect a Miracle Cure Either Jay B. Barney and Martin Reeves' latest HBR article, "AI Won’t Give You a New Sustainable Advantage," offers a much-needed dose of reality amidst the AI #hype. Yes, generative AI is a game-changer. It's revolutionizing everything from product development and customer service to decision-making and business model innovation. But here's the catch: as AI becomes more accessible, its ability to provide a unique competitive edge diminishes. Think of it like the steam engine or the personal computer. Revolutionary at first, but eventually they became industry standards, not differentiators. So, how can businesses leverage AI effectively? Barney and Reeves suggest focusing on amplifying existing, hard-to-replicate advantages. Possibly -- and this is my suggestion -- use it to empower and augment your best employees, while increasing process adaptivity. Think Amazon's unparalleled logistics network or Google's deep understanding of search. AI can supercharge these strengths, making them even more formidable. 💪 The key takeaway? Don't just chase the AI shiny object. Instead, integrate AI into your unique organizational capabilities. Use it to enhance your strengths, optimize your processes, and become more agile in a rapidly evolving market. Are you already adopting AI? How?
