Friday news #WhatsEmerging Grocers enacting Inflation-free shopping? 🥦🛒💵 Walmart has responded to the growing concern of groceries being too expensive with a new Thanksgiving meal that averages at $7 per person. This has come at a time of consumer frustration as grocery and QSR prices surge beyond affordability. PepsiCo has also responded to ‘shrinkflation’ complaints by adding more chips in its bags after sales started to turn downwards. Thoughts? Are these good strategies? Is this a new direction for large grocers to brand themselves as more affordable? https://lnkd.in/dCeZawFA https://lnkd.in/d4tdSAqS

When it comes to the grocery aisle, Walmart still dominates. According to the latest "Whole Paycheck Report" by PYMNTS Intelligence, Amazon outperformed Walmart in nearly every retail category during the 2023 holiday season, with gross sales of $209 billion compared to Walmart's $141 billion. However, Walmart continues to outpace Amazon in sustenance sales, particularly in the food and beverage segment. Walmart's food and beverage segment share was nearly 19% in Q4 2023, while Amazon had only 2.9%. Despite Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods and recent enhancements, Walmart continues to dominate the grocery aisle. #amazon #walmart #grocery

‘Tis a new week and that means a fresh batch of #retail news is waiting for 🫵 you. What were the latest stories that caught our attention and you shouldn’t miss? 🔍 🆕 #Aldi stepped up their “Can’t match this” campaign with ads comparing prices between them and their competitors. The “swap and save” ads are a fightback against price-matching by Tesco, Asda, or Morrisons. 🆕 Merchandising enhancements and technology upgrades will continue to gain traction. Both improve customer experience, and retailers are well aware of that. By making stores more shoppable they are winning customers in the long run. Probably two days of standing in the long lines are over? 🤔 🆕 A sad day for Aldi’s muffins. More than twelve thousand cases had to be pulled because of the ingredients included in them - more specifically walnuts. 🍀 Luckily, the undeclared ingredients brought no illnesses. 🆕 Instacart is making the deliveries more smooth. It will be in the form of a drop-off for customers who don’t immediately collect the goods. Previously the workers had to bring the orders 🔙 back to the store. The other updates confirm whether there is a pet in the residence. #Kimbino #RetailNews #Retail #RetailInsights #RetailStrategy #OnlineDeals #BestDeals #OnlineShopping #ConsumerTrends #ShoppingBehavior #OnlineShopping

Their data aligns with recent announcements by major retailers about heavy inventory and deeper discounting strategies. Savvy food and retail marketers will be looking for ways to drive demand in a market that expects and is seeking greater value than before. #food #grocery #retail #marketing #grocers https://lnkd.in/gFH_BYjm

The old statistic comparing Walmart's and Target's grocery businesses has raised its head again. This time in a Business Insider article (link in comments): "Walmart US makes nearly 60% of its revenue from the grocery category ... Food and beverage sales accounted for less than a quarter of Target's sales last year." Just a polite reminder that this is a misleading metric. Walmart’s 60% number (which is running at 60.3% in the first half of 2024) includes food and beverage, household products, paper goods, pet supplies, and beauty. By comparison, Target’s 20% (which is 23.2% in the first half of 2024) includes only food and beverage. It does not include household products, paper goods, pet supplies, or beauty. So, it is *not* directly comparable to the Walmart number. The directly comparable numbers for essentials are shown below. Note that these are first half of 2024 only so the percentages will shift as the second half is a traditionally bigger general merchandise (non-food) period. #retail #retailnews #statistics #data #grocery #essentials

🚀 Walmart is innovating again! Meet Bettergoods, their new grocery brand. ⚡️ A response to the inflation-induced growth, Walmart is stepping up their game. They're not only matching the pace with Aldi, Lidl, and Trader Joe’s, but also aiming to surpass them. 🍽️ What's unique? Bettergoods is all about trend-driven, chef-inspired food items. Most priced under $5, they're targeting the taste buds of the masses. 🌿 The best part? They're focusing on healthier options, including plant-based products. The decision was made after shoppers expressed their desire for more "elevated culinary, inspirational types of items". 💡 The strategy here is clear. Walmart is leveraging its position as the country's largest grocer to drive both store and online traffic. 💸 The result? A 7% year-over-year increase in net sales for groceries in the U.S, amounting to $264.2 billion. 🛍️ With Bettergoods, Walmart is not just aiming at a wider market share. They're changing the perception of store brands, much like Costco's Kirkland. 🔎 The takeaway? Innovation and adaptability are key to thriving in this fast-paced market. 🔄 Remember, change is the only constant in business. And Walmart's Bettergoods is a testament to that. Note: This isn't about copying Walmart's strategy. It's about learning from their adaptability and innovation. It's about staying relevant in a market that's ever-evolving. #walmart #business

A company that aggregates coupon codes and online offers on its website is also checking into savings at grocery stores. "Young adults are battling sticker shock at the grocery store by supersizing their groceries. They are turning to bulk purchases, splitting their food costs with friends, roommates, family and neighbors. Shoppers in their 20s and 30s are trying to fight higher prices by joining warehouse-store giants such as Costco Wholesale and Sam's Club." This from Margot Amouyal of the The Wall Street Journal (thanks for the share, The Food Institute). I just finished an article for Brandingmag discussing the power of 'Social barriers' in shopper decision-making, citing our recent #Snack50 Report finding that categories like tortilla chips and pretzels are actually most impacted by social considerations (vs. even factors like price). 𝗦𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: if consumers are indeed forming these 'buying groups' to combat pricing, should we really be so focused on PRICE, or are our strategic and activational efforts better served addressing social considerations? After all, if I'm making a Costco run on behalf of not only myself, but also my "friends, roommates, family, and neighbors," I'm much more concerned about social consensus than I am price points... #consumerinsights #shoppermarketing #foodandbeverage https://lnkd.in/gypTUe_a
