👧 My daughter’s five-year-old logic put me in my place. I mentioned meeting some friends and she corrected me: ‘You mean colleagues, Mummy?’ 🤔 I had to laugh. In her world, mummy spends most of her day in meetings with colleagues. So her logic made perfect sense. But it was quite the commentary on my ‘work-life balance’. ⚖️ And I was a bit bothered by it. When did work become my whole life? Am I not balancing time with my friends? Is this an unhealthy example I’m giving my daughter? 😳 But after a brief moment of existential parenting crisis… I remembered why the phrase ‘work-life balance’ upsets me. It sets up this unachievable idea of a perfect balance. Instead, I choose to embrace work-life integration. 👋 When my daughter pops into client calls with a cheerful ‘hello!’, I welcome it. She usually gets bored quickly and wanders off, but those small moments of integration help her understand my work while showing clients my full humanity. 🏠 The pandemic reinforced this approach. With everyone juggling home life and work simultaneously, we stopped pretending these worlds could be perfectly separated. I found myself doing focussed work in quiet moments, then shifting to family time, then back again—a natural flow rather than rigid boundaries. ✨ Integration isn't about mixing everything together chaotically. It's about being authentic about how we live and work today. Sometimes I'm fully present at home, sometimes I'm heads down working, sometimes it’s a combination. 💫 But I'm always genuinely me. My daughter may think I have colleagues instead of friends, but she's growing up seeing that work can be a natural, integrated part of a fulfilling life. 💝 And that's exactly the example I want to set. That said, I’ll be sure to emphasise that certain people are ‘friends’ next time they come around. 😉
Also big difference here is you get to choose your work and who you work with (most of the time) 🙌🏽 When we first start off our careers, this is not really the case 🫠

2wKids have an incredible way of cutting through the noise with their honesty and simple logic. Their perspective often makes us reflect on our own actions and priorities. It's heart melting to see how children can teach us to embrace authenticity and balance in ways we might not have considered before.
