What are the rules for political advertising on broadcast TV or radio? Political ads aren’t allowed on traditional broadcast TV or radio channels in accordance with the Communications Act 2003. That said, TV and radio shows give political parties airtime as part of their broadcasts, which doesn’t count as advertising. Find out more at @Ofcom. 🚨 Ahead of the next General Election, we're sending a clear warning to broadcasters to maintain the highest standards of impartiality - particularly those who use politicians as presenters. Today we've published qualitative research to explore audiences’ expectations of due impartiality. We found that: 📰 Audiences welcome existing restrictions preventing politicians from presenting news content. 🎙️ Views on politicians presenting current affairs programmes are mixed, but while there are concerns, there's no clear consensus for an outright ban. ⚖️ Due impartiality is strongly valued by audiences in news programming. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dqbm_C_E #Broadcast #Politics #TV

In recent weeks, particularly during sporting events and news broadcasts, broadcast TV outlets have aired content warnings before airing political ads that carry anti-trans messaging and in front of ads with graphic images for a little-known anti-abortion presidential candidate. The pre-ad warnings echo FCC regulations that state the same thing: Regardless of how viewers feel about the ads, broadcast networks and TV stations have no choice but to televise them, even if the ads contain offensive visuals and untruthful messages. https://lnkd.in/gBAr5uxP

A free public media is a hallmark of our democracy. Suppression of the media (the enemy as described) will be very hard to do, except in one single case. That being National Public Radio and PBS TV. From the Internet: "The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is the steward of the U.S. federal government's investment in public broadcasting and the nation's largest single source of funding for public radio, television, and related services." I once had a Republican consultant describe NPR as "National Democratic Radio" and the funding for it has always been an issue for the Republican Party. Should the House stay Republican, this is the first area I'd watch for action to take place concerning media--removing federal funding for the two organizations above. Let's see what happens!

After the fiasco of the polls forecasting the election result, I've been digging into a couple of areas around how we consume media, and I'm beginning to conclude that we don't know anywhere near as much about consumers as we think we do. I think this will improve, but it does require investment and significant change. My thoughts here: https://lnkd.in/eUtQaTwb
