Every July 7th, since 1963, we celebrate International Soil Conservation Day in honor of the American scientist Hugh Hammond Bennett, who dedicated his life to demonstrating the importance of soil care for agricultural productivity. Bennett stated, "Productive land is our foundation, because everything we do begins and is sustained by the continued productivity of our agricultural lands." How to celebrate International Soil Conservation Day? We can all contribute to the health and conservation of soils through practices such as: •Using organic fertilizer or worm humus. •Implementing direct seeding. •Associating crops for pest control. •Practicing intelligent crop rotation. Join us in protecting this valuable resource! #SoilConservationDay #SoilCare #Environment #Sustainability

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 Soil health research has determined how to manage soil in a way that improves soil function. Maximize Presence of Living Roots Minimize Disturbance Maximize Soil Cover Maximize Biodiversity As world population and food production demands rise, keeping our soil healthy and productive is of paramount importance. By farming using soil health principles and systems that include no-till, cover cropping, and diverse rotations, more and more farmers are increasing their soil’s organic matter and improving microbial activity. As a result, farmers are sequestering more carbon, increasing water infiltration, and improving wildlife and pollinator habitat—all while harvesting better profits and often better yields. Our latest review article is now published in Science of the Total Environment: "Conservation Agriculture Effects on Ecosystem Health and Sustainability – A Review of Rice-Wheat Cropping System." This comprehensive review explores how conservation agriculture practices—like zero tillage, crop residue retention, and diversified cropping—enhance soil health, water use efficiency, and climate resilience. It also addresses the challenges of adoption in South Asia's rice-wheat systems. 📄 Read more about it here: DOI:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.177535 We welcome your feedback and thoughts! #SustainableFarming #ConservationAgriculture #RiceWheatSystems #ClimateResilience

🔬 New Insights on Rodent Management in Crete’s Greenhouses 🌿🐀 Our recent research assessed rodent-induced crop yield losses and management practices across greenhouses in Crete, Greece. While chemical rodenticides are widely used, many greenhouse managers report growing interest in Ecologically Based Rodent Management (EBRM). Our findings show that 71.1% of surveyed managers combine chemical and non-chemical methods, highlighting the need for more sustainable pest control solutions. The adoption of EBRM could significantly reduce both crop losses and environmental impact, opening new avenues for sustainable agriculture. 🌱 #Med4Pest #EBRM #PestManagement #SustainableAgriculture #ResearchInnovation

It should be an obligation to cultivate our farms sustainably as we are stewards for future generations. Soil conservation is proven to increase quality and quantity of crop yields over the long term. Allow me to highlight one of the 23 greatest environmental quotes by Earth911 during April 14th 2020 Earth day, " The Earth will not continue to offer it's harvest except with faithful stewardship. We can not say we love the land and take steps to destroy it for future use by future generations" by John Paul11. Seedpro has chosen soil conservation as the way to go when developing it's crop nutrition products. #seedproco2deed #SEEDPRO #mboleayaseedpro #wegrowmorewithless

This #GeneralElection we are digging deeper into the soil crisis. Dr Jennifer Rowntree shares her thoughts on why many of our agricultural soils are in trouble, and how university research can help. “By not recognising the importance of soil, we’ve dropped the ball on things like securing our food security in the future and protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services… What we really need is a comprehensive soil assessment programme and incentives to protect soils. We need to support farmers and invest in resilient food systems with reduced environmental impact.” From soil assessment to smart farming, Dr Rowntree explains how our in-field research with novel sensors and agri-tech is developing practical solutions for healthier soils and a secure food supply. What is the main reasons for soil erosion? Tillage and application of chemical fertilisers in soil is the main resons for soil erosion in agriculture. How to stop soil erosion? 1. No till: Stop tilling or digging of soil. 2. No off-farm input: Stop using chemical fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or plastics in soil 3. Mulching: Always keep the soil surface covered with dry leaves or other organic matter. 4. Covet cropping: Always keep the soil surface covered with green plants. 5. Multilayer polycropping: Create plant biodiversity to support soil biodiversity and soil health.

New research from UC Davis shows that combining conservation practices, including no-till and keeping the ground covered with cover crops and plant residue, improved soil health over the long-term. Benefits included soil stability and water retention—very important issues for the San Joaquin Valley! https://buff.ly/4acqrJO #CRARS #regenerativeagriculture #conservationagriculture #californiaagriculture

Healthy soil is essential for successful crop production, yet it’s increasingly under threat. According to the UNFAO State of Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture Report (2021), one-third of global cropland is degraded due to human activity, and an additional 18% is deteriorating from natural causes. This decline comes at a critical time, as we demand more from our soils while using fewer resources. Protecting and improving soil health is not just an agricultural necessity—it’s a global imperative. Biostimulants can have a positive impact on soil health by optimising nutrient use efficiency, improving soil structure, enhancing biodiversity and more.
