200 Degrees Coffee Roasters, the Foresight-backed coffee roaster and retailer, has appointed advisors to help review strategic options for the next stage of its growth, Propel has learned. The 21-strong business, which was founded in 2012 by Rob Darby and Tom Vincent and is led by Stephen Fern, has expanded its footprint across the Midlands and north of England. 200 Degrees is understood to be working with M&A advisors at AlixPartners on its options, although it is thought no official process has begun as yet. It is thought 200 Degrees will attract interest and has received inbound enquiries from trade buyers across the value chain, as well as private equity. Foresight invested £3m in the then six-strong 200 Degrees in December 2017. Sector investor Paul Campbell was appointed as the group’s chairman in 2021. Fern told Propel in January that the business expects revenue in its current financial year, ending March 2024, to exceed £16m. Fern said the company was looking to open four or five sites in the next financial year and has already secured two leases for openings towards the end of 2024. Sales in its wholesale business continue to rise while revenue from online and subscriptions has significantly accelerated, and its barista schools are on a similar trajectory. Fern said: “When it comes to our coffee shops, we are confident in our ability to open successfully across the UK. However, the other pillars of our business have grown dramatically in recent years. This is a picture from the very first market we attended as a business for Public Espresso. We're in the basement of the Horsefeathers building on Buffalo's West Side in 2013. We showed up with about 100 cups, no cream or sugar, and no idea what to expect. We wanted customers to taste our coffee and our roasting philosophy on our terms. Looking back, it was a silly choice to limit our customer base and our product, but I'll chalk it up to personal pride at the time. I'm always glad we started as a mobile operation because it taught us one of the greatest lessons about our customers. No matter where we set up or who we talked to, there were people who referred to themselves as " coffee snobs." It didn't matter if they had a $2k home espresso machine plumbed into their kitchen counter or a 2lb can of pre-ground Folgers in the cupboard; both identified with that term. It's a term we heard over and over again, and it meant something different every time. These interactions reminded us that coffee is one of those deeply personal rituals. However you package, sell, or serve it, customers will want to make it their own, and you have to give them the space to do so. Needless to say, we made sure that going forward, we had cream and sugar (and eventually stevia, honey, oat milk, almond milk, decaf, more cups, etc.). And we always remember to listen to our customer base and not just when they're asking us a question. #publicespresso #smallbusiness #buffalo #buffalosmallbusiness #marketing
