☕️ How a cup of takeaway coffee taught me that the most important feature of a product can easily be overlooked. ☕️ If you were creating a new type of coffee, you might focus on the roast, the origin of the beans, perhaps the variations on offer. Then you might consider differentiating on price. But I recently learnt that an absolute dealbreaker when buying coffee intended to be drunk whilst walking has nothing to do with the liquid itself - rather it’s the quality of the cup it comes in. It was a painful revelation as the lid popped off mid stride and hot liquid splashed over my hand. But it did serve as a useful reminder that one poorly designed feature can make buyers lose trust - needless to say I won’t become a repeat customer of this particular coffee shop. But the Wall Street Journal reports that new CEO Brian Niccol is ending that practice, opting to return to a positioning as a premium brand. Over the summer, the coffee chain introduced a new “pairings menu,” which gives customers the ability to pair a tall hot or iced tea or coffee with some staple foods, including a butter croissant or breakfast sandwich, for $5 to $6. This holiday season, however, you won’t see offers like that. Last month, some deals were reduced to just once per week.
