As election season heats up, it's important to remember that politicians are nothing more than "pigs at the trough of spending." The truth is that current, past, and future spending plans are unsustainable. Politicians that spend a lifetime in government is more about power and lining one's own pockets than it is about serving the public. What we need is term limits and completely new leadership at every level of government, regardless of party? The same old, same old, will not solve any current or future problems. And, while the same old, same old process continues, the bill keeps getting bigger and bigger. https://lnkd.in/d7gPwvux

Great blog post by Franklin De Vrieze 🤍 🇺🇦 from Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) on the need to strengthen oversight of public debt. This discussion should not be separated from the #corruption and mismanagement, which has in many cases precipitated such debt crises. https://lnkd.in/eBswSc6f #democracy #pfm doing-debt-democratically

As we approach the provincial Election on October 19th, be-aware that the government plans to increase our Provincial Debt from $103.783 Billion in 2023/24 to $164.973 Billion in 2026/27. That is almost double our planned revenue of $86.408 Billion for 2026/27. Is this what our Non-Democratic Party has in store for us. Ask yourself where these funds are coming from as you review the attached budget. See page 11 of 170 for official source of snapshot below. Since 2012, the OAT-BUND spread has only exceeded 80 bps twice: during the sovereign debt crisis and when Marine Le Pen aimed to exit the euro area. Today, the Rassemblement National has shifted its stance and no longer seeks to leave the European Union. However, its political program, especially on pension and tax reforms, appears to lack fiscal rigor. Macron is emphasizing the elections as a choice between order and chaos, a risky move in light of the country's high public debt levels. #Finance #EuropeanUnion #Politics #bondvigilant

In case anyone woke up to the election results and wondered whether it mattered for the £. It doesn’t. The cart below shows the strength of the currency versus the $ over the last year. Why? In general, what moves markets is: A) Surpises - the election result was not a surprise B) Policy that affects the economic outlook meaningfully - there are many components to Labour policy but on the economy and budget there’s nothing concrete to say things will change materially (it’s been a tactic to say relatively little here) #investing #politics #ukelection

1moNice try…. “And now to the asterisk: Friday’s net gain was a reflection of temporary shocks to the US labor market, with this snapshot bearing the impacts and ripple effects of two major deadly hurricanes and large labor strikes.”
