*********** READING WITH IMPACT ************ After nearly 16 years with Orbis I'm lucky enough to be taking a bit of an extended break this summer to regroup and recharge ahead of getting stuck into some of the exciting opportunities ahead. I want to use some of this time to review some of the most impactful material I've come across AND to seek out the best of what others have found impactful. By impactful I mean books/articles/essays that have meaningfully changed the way you think/act/behave. Lots of content is interesting, or provides a different perspective, but, in my experience, it's rare to find those gems which REALLY shift your lens, the mental models you use, or how you show up for family, friends and colleagues. I've included some of my all-time top hits below, and would like to tap into the enormous wisdom of my LinkedIn network to source other ideas. A great flow chart from the UK Investment Association for those who want to understand which fund share class to select as 'primary'. In contrast to how some data providers default to the oldest, legacy share class, it seems very clear that one should perhaps choose a share class that is 'unbundled', and 'freely available to all investors... '. For the Marlborough Multi Cap Income Fund, this is the 'P' share class! This also covers c.99% of all fund units in issue so most representative of the returns delivered to the wider investor base.

Election Post - Been asked quite a lot this past 6 months or so on the impact of todays polls, so thought worth sharing my 2 pence as to the impact on markets and how our portfolios are positioned for today. Key points are threefold: 1) UK Equities make up 3.8% of the MSCI Worldwide equity index, so whatever happens today we’re relatively unimportant on the world investment stage. 2) A labour win is pretty much priced into the markets, it’s now surely a matter of by how much (for record I’m not a fan of either party or politicians in general). 3) Huge swings either way aren’t expected in gilts, equities or the £GBP in the immediate term. Long term we’re reasonably positive on UK equities, but nothing to do with labours manifesto or what they reckon can be achieved in the next 2-3 years. The key drivers will be: 1) Revaluation - The UK is the most undervalued (relative to world PE averages) and unloved western economy in the world. 2) Interest rate cuts - At least 1 if not 2 rate cuts are anticipated before the year end. This should provide additional capital stimulus to both listed and SME companies alike. Additionally gilt yields should fall triggering positive returns for cautious investors. As schemes progress along their journeys, credit is forming an increasing part of the overall asset base. But it's not easy! thanks to Citywire and Gavin Lumsden for highlighting the ongoing sales of UK Equities at rock bottom valuations by asset allocators. In the half year report for Schroder Income Growth Fund PLC to end February 2024 which was published recently, I commented on the noticeable disconnect between company fundamentals and valuations. This disconnect has been recognised by overseas corporates, private equity buyers, as well as companies themselves, all of whom have begun to take advantage of the situation through bids and share buy backs. This trend will no doubt continue as long as valuations remain compelling. Such low valuations present attractive opportunities for forward returns for investors, large and small, institutional and retail, and should not be reserved solely for corporate and private equity buyers

Lower growth and higher interest rates have forced a change of approach among private equity (PE) fund managers. Longer exit cycles are being seen as fund managers seek higher valuations from various sources including secondary markets.
