BMA report: ‘broken mental health system’ Depressing reading although no surprises. MH Service changes last 14y driven by austerity (& ⏫️ demand) have created a fragmented under-resourced service that has had to ration care. Unenviable choices regards threshold for care, a dismal debate over bed resources vs community resources (when the reality is we need more of both), and an inevitable increase in risk tolerated across the system. All of us must continue to push for the need for parity of esteem and an integrated patient centred service that provides long term (if necessary) continuity of care. Enough beds, enough community resources, enough therapy, decent buildings and enough staff. Economically, as well as ethically, plenty of reason to properly resource MH services. #mentalhealthmatters #parityofesteem https://lnkd.in/dcBkCceg

Young women’s mental health: The significance of gender-based violence as a key driver in young women’s disproportionate experiences of mental ill-health (watch this space for our policy brief on this topic). The youth mental health crisis and gender-based violence (GBV) are both topics of current media attention. However, even though experiencing violence is a known risk factor for poor mental health, these issues are rarely spoken about together. In discussion with our youth advisory group, we believe that it is time to have an urgent conversation to highlight the effect(s) of GBV on the mental health of young Australians and to take steps to decrease the incidence of this salient risk factor. In this webinar young people and experts working in this area will discuss the impact of GBV on mental health and the ways that we can decrease and prevent the incidence of both. Mental Health and GBV: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore A new study by the HSRC highlights a link between mental health struggles in men and gender-based violence (GBV). Key findings: • 20% of men admitted to violence against a partner. • 31% of these men have attempted suicide. • Over 33% of women report lifetime abuse, yet only 2% report it to authorities. The solution: • Strengthen mental health support, especially for men and survivors. • Teach respect and boundaries early. • Transform harmful societal norms. It’s time to prioritise mental health and break the cycle of GBV. Let’s act now! We will look at this in more detail in the coming few days. In the two short years we’ve been around, we’ve delivered more than 3,300 free and low-cost counselling sessions to nearly 800 individuals across New Brunswick – and the demand is growing. According to the government of New Brunswick, over the past five years the demand for addiction and mental health services has increased 16 per cent. Requests from adults are up nine per cent, while youth service needs are up 33 per cent. As a result of increased demand, wait times for new high-priority referrals have increased and less than 50 per cent are currently receiving treatment within national benchmarks. Just Us is attempting to fill the gap. We believe that all residents of New Brunswick should be able to access the mental health support they require, as soon as possible, without wait times. Every moment counts when you’re struggling. We’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact of our therapy programs and their transformative effects on people’s lives. Now we need you to help us reach even more people in need. #GivingTuesday #MentalHealthCantWait
